Google released the AOSP code for Android 16 this week, but without the usual device trees & drivers for Pixel devices, instead using the "cuttlefish" virtual device as a reference target. It'll make custom ROM development for Pixels and other devices harder. androidauthority.com/google-no #Android #Google #AOSP #OpenSource #CustomROMs

Android Authority · AOSP isn't dead, but Google just landed a huge blow to custom ROM developersGoogle has confirmed it isn't discontinuing AOSP, but it's making a change that makes it harder for devs to build Android for Pixel phones.

I have an old Android device, the LG Tribute Dynasty, that I want to see if I can somehow get a custom ROM working with it or something. It is a MediaTek device, but both the AOSP and kernel sources are available at the Internet Archive (I remember uploading them).

What's neat is that the device can be rooted because it's vulnerable to the MTK-su exploit (the device never received updates beyond November 1, 2019). This means we can do some stuff with it, but I don't know how useful it'll be.

📣 Attention all custom ROM users and advocates for digital rights! 📣

Google's Play Integrity is limiting access to certain functionalities and applications for those using custom operating systems. This is a direct attack on the open-source community and a step towards further consolidating Google's monopoly in the mobile ecosystem.

The European Commission is aware of the situation, but has deemed it a low priority: europarl.europa.eu/doceo/docum

It's time for us to take action and show Google and the EU how much we care about this issue! 💥

"Android treats third-party launchers poorly, but this survey could help"

"TL;DR

  • Developers behind some big-name launchers have come together to create a survey for users.
  • This comes after years of third-party launchers being treated like second-class citizens on Android.
  • The survey’s findings will be presented at a Google event in October."
