It's official.

I now have a Customer Service etc. folder in my email inbox to file all of the customer service related emails I send and receive.

I have had ENOUGH of crap or non-existant customer service.

ENOUGH.

"There's a whole class of audiobooks where AI can be a perfect substitute – thanks to Audible, and its enshittification. Audible has waged war on unionized voice actors, replacing them with desperate newbies who will tolerate terrible working conditions, including a practice called "punch and roll" that makes actors responsible for doing their own editing when they misspeak, rather than re-recording a passage for an editor to fix later ("pickups"). There are plenty of Audible books that are recorded without a director or an editor or a proofer, meaning that inexperienced actor's mistakes and mispronunciations survive into the final product. These books, produced by the monopolist audiobook platform, with a 90%+ market share for popular fiction, are already degraded to the point of being not fit for purpose. Replacing the actors with AI barely makes a difference.

AI text-to-speech is a giant improvement on existing TTS tools, and there are plenty of people who stand to benefit from this, for example, people with visual impairments. But there's no business model in selling readaloud bots to blind people – certainly not a model that recoups the hundreds of billions that has been sprayed around for AI training and operation.

The AI business model relies on obliterating the wage bill of workers and replacing it with a cheaper software license. Unfortunately (for the fortunes of AI investors) the majority of workers whose wages can be readily swapped for a software license are the lowest-paid, most precarious ones, people whose jobs have already been degraded and enshittified to the point where no one will notice the difference if they are replaced with a chatbot."

The screwdriver handle in my #VStar250's toolkit broke yesterday¹, and the toolkit isn't listed that I could find on the #Yamaha parts website. I tried unsuccessfully to find an equivalent (same tips, similar size so it'll fit in the toolkit bag) at Home Depot, so I figured I would call Yamaha customer service today and ask them how to get a replacement.

Update: After complaining loudly in chat with customer service, Uber ended up refunding the whole ride. I am glad they chose to do the right thing. I just wish it didn’t take so much work to get them to do so.

Uber would rather keep some money than make things right for a customer.

Yesterday’s ride had a tire fail about 30 minutes from our final destination. The driver, who was really nice, had to cancel the ride before getting us home. My daughter and I had to call for (and pay for) another ride to finally get home.

Uber charged me for the full ride even though we were about a dozen miles from the destination. When I asked for that to be reviewed and get a partial refund, they said no.

I don’t use ride share much, I am glad there is still competition because I will be using other ways of getting around instead of Uber.

The shortsightedness of Uber customer service to cling onto a money instead of making things right has lost them a customer and garnered them negative social posts about the experience.

I’m sure that me not using their service occasionally won’t hurt their bottom line. Nor will this post do much damage — though you can help spread it with a boost.

That’s the sad thing about large corporations, they don’t feel the repercussions of their bad behavior. It sucks.

But, I will still vote with my money and not give Uber any.

I was on one of Blind Dave's short spinoff podcasts yesterday, talking about AI risks - I have no idea how he edits things so quickly, but it's out today; if anyone is interested!

It covers therapists, military uses, ethics, romance scams, all sorts - And the podcast I couldn't remember was "Cautionary Tales" from @TimHarford talking to Michael Lewis. Link in comment.
