Dramatic growth of the aquarium sweet potato while I was gone at PyCon US

The sweet potato is growing really well producing many slips. I decided to pull out the slips, gave them to my mother in law who then planted them in the backyard garden. We will see if the slips will grow into more sweet potato tubers. In the meantime I've put back the "mother tuber" into the tank again. I'm quite impressed with how fast it has growing in the last 4 weeks.

I just got in on the fad of "put sweet potato in your aquarium". Didn't really know how we're supposed to do it, so I just stuck one whole thing on Saturday and now it has some roots growing out of it.

Having to put another fish to sleep is a really shitty way to start a Monday.
This is the problem with the #fishkeeping hobby - when you setup a tank and stock it with a load of babies, they all grow up together, but they all grow old together too. So you end up losing them one after another.
I think I might hang up my buckets once these all pass.

We went to Maidenhead Aquatics in Coton, yesterday and brought back 5 red cherry shrimps (sakura) and a zebra nerite snail.

We actually got 5 adult shrimps and at least as many baby ones "for free". Also one of the adult #shrimp appears to be pregnant (carrying eggs under her abdomen). That's so exciting!
Our snail appeared to have been a bladder snail which can reproduce like crazy... So we decided to get rid of it. The zebra #nerite #snail we bought should not reproduce.
Plants are still growing very nicely, lots of new leaves appearing, roots extending... We did another big gardening session yesterday, cutting and replanting them in the background.

This snail is becoming a good friend: it's eating the green and brown algae that has been growing on some of the leaves.
Because yes, we have a little algae developing, but we're not too concerned. It's because nitrites and nitrates are still a little high (the water is still cycling #TrustTheProcess
They are actually at a level still too high to buy any fish or shrimp or snail. But that snail despite these odds made it! 
The snail is also leaving poops behind it.

There is life in the tank!!!
We've spotted this little black #snail!
Now that explains some small holes in the plants .
Ammonia level is now safe, but nitrites are still a bit high so we've got to wait a little longer before getting some shrimps .
We did a proper water change yesterday, vaccumed some of the brownish biofilm.
We cut back some of the Limnophila heterophylla that were touching the water line already. And replanted the cuttings at the back.

I closed a drawer on my thumbnail pretty darn hard. There was much profanity. I am now watching my oscar fish Jeff trying to fit more food in his mouth which is so full he can't fully close it. When I'm home I watch the fish more than a screen. #tropicalaquarium #fishkeeping #oscar #cichlid #birchir #catfish
