Yay next one done. Finished #SenseAndSensibility by #JaneAusten on #Libby

Watching the film version with Emma Thompson a few months ago ignited my excitement to read through all her books for the first time. P&P, Emma now Sense and Sensibility. I knew what to expect from the movie but I enjoyed it. My only gripe is Edward Ferrars seemed like such a bore I don’t know why Elinor held out all her hopes on him. I know English society wasn’t kind to poorer women etc but still, were there no other men at all at any of the places she went in London at least? Also the big love story of the book is basically based on two people who never do anything together. There was a lot of side-eyeing between the Dashwoods and the other women characters in this book which was funny at least. Probably liked better than Emma but still a rung beneath Pride and Prejudice

What are your favorite amazon alternatives? This zine is free to download on my ko-fi. If you like what I do, feel free to buy something at

🛒
ID: Five photos of a zine titled how I've been boycotting amazon for years and it's easier than most of you think. The cover features an illustration of the amazon logo with teeth in its smile dripping red. The second photo shows headlines about amazon's labor crimes. The third photo shows pages explaining tips for reading the zine including not using the phrase "no ethical consumption under capitalism" to hide behind. It also includes a list of alternatives to amazon's website including ebay, stores' actual websites, small artists, and secondhand shopping apps. The text is written in gel pen of various colors, and a doodle of a yellow shopping basket is at the bottom. The fourth photo shows pages that list amazon offshoot alternatives such as Storygraph instead of goodreads, youtube instead of twitch, libby and hoopla instead of audible, and antennapod or RSS radio for podcasts. The final photo shows the back cover of the zine which has a written disclaimer that explains that the author charliettea understands this may be more difficult for some people than others, but they hope people start to consider and change their behavior.

I borrowed it from the digital library of Berlin (#VOEBB #onleihe) as a test run for my new #Tolino #eBook reader.

After I finish the second book I borrowed ("BioShock: Rapture" by John Shirley, also in German) I'll try to borrowin eBooks from #libby, which has a better selection of English titles...

Latest read! 📕 Emma by Jane Austen. Never read before and borrowed it after I devoured Pride and Prejudice. I definitely took longer to warm up to this. Emma is a difficult character to root for and the other characters who turn out to be good are all concealing their true selves for about 90% of the book.

I liked the ending! Contrast with P&P where I identified so hard with Elizabeth Bennet throughout, this just felt differently. I’m not even sure I want to watch a TV or film adaptation of Emma now. (Clueless was based on this?)

Also, off the back of this, if you have access to one: use your local #Library !

In the UK at least:
- Interlibrary loans are free or cheap, which gives you access to a huge catalogue
- Many have access to #Audiobooks and #eBooks via #BorrowBox
- You can access magazines! I like #Wired, #NewScientist, #BBCGoodFood, #NationalGeographic but there's many more via #Libby

Your taxes pay for this, and it's shocking how many people still pay for these #subscriptions separately!

Latest read I just finished Pride and Prejudice. Oh it was so good 🔥. I had watched the BBC miniseries about 20 years ago , and remembered the basics. I absolutely fell in love with the text though and the characters of Elizabeth, Mr. Darcy and Mrs and Mr. Bennet. I have a lot of thoughts on this story.

Now, I’m trying to write a kind of story inspired by this and other Austen stuff but for a trans girl as the FMC lead. Will I ever finish? 😅

Anyone out there borrow library ebooks via the #Libby app using a device OTHER THAN a kindle? It's frustrating that all that business goes to Bezos but I don't know how to avoid it without losing significant functionality.
