Thoughtful reflections arise from Momma’s album: “Welcome to My Blue Sky”

Indie/alt rockers Momma just released their newest full-length album, Welcome to My Blue Sky today (April 4th). This collection of 12 introspective songs is a bit of a departure from their 2022 breakthrough album Household Name, but just a rewarding to the listener.
The band is firing on all cylinders on this new album with thoughtful reflective lyrics coalesced with catchy hooks and guitar riffs by Etta Friedman and Allegra Weingarten, and wonderful accompanying drums (Preston Fulks) and bass (Aron Kobayashi Ritch). The album moves effortlessly from pounding guitars as in “I Want You (Fever)” and “Rodeo” to poignant, quieter tunes such as “My Old Street” and “Take Me With You.”

If 2022’s Household Name represented a band searching for stardom…which Momma definitely found. Then Welcome to My Blue Sky is an exploration of the impacts of their newly achieved stardom and how the band members reacted to these impacts. It is quite a journey with the many ups-and-downs clearly articulated throughout the album.
The honesty and emotions expressed in Welcome To My Blue Sky are what make it such a good release. Many of us will never experience what Momma has over the past several years, but through these songs we can get an evocative sample of it. Bandmate, Aron Kobayashi Ritch does a great job harnessing these emotions into the production of this record.

Momma will be kicking off a tour to support the album later this month, with many shows double-billed with another great Indie band, Wishy. Try and catch a show if they are passing nearby. Peace!
