What Counts as Wild? On Doves, Junglefowl, and Birding Semantics in the Grenadines

While in Bequia, I saw, heard, and photographed African Collared-Doves. In St. Vincent, I encountered Eurasian Collared-Doves, both vocal and visible. In both cases, Merlin ID instantly recognised them—no disclaimers, no qualifiers. Just birds. Wild ones, apparently. What I didn’t see were Red Junglefowl. But I heard them. Their crowing echoed from hillsides and yards,…

My mum told me about an app that listens out for #birds and then identifies them from their #birdsong. I knew there were a lot of birds here, but during a ten minute period at the weekend it identified all of these!

It then plays back whatever you want it to, so you can learn to identify the birds by ear.

The app is called Merlin. It’s free. It’s my new favourite thing. merlinbirdid.com

Submitting a rare bird sighting based on audio always weirds me out. I don't know what a Virginia rail sounds like! I don't have the courage of my comparison-listening convictions! Don't smite me, nice eBird reviewer I met recently!

We’re back home and it’s a beautiful morning in Lee’s Summit (#KCish) so we’re sitting on the deck.

Which reminds me… Do you know what Merlin never picked up while we were down in conservationist’s paradise, Shannon County? Invasive European house sparrows!

Add that to the long list of city noises I’ll be glad to leave behind. Someday, over the 🌈

Today I learned [via the amazing Merlin Bird ID app] that this is a female #RedWingedBlackbird. While I've never really thought about it, I didn't know about their sexual dimorphism. RWBBs are increasingly hard to come by around here since we've seen so much wetland loss.

I took this photo in June, 2009 🤯 with a Fuji point and shoot, and am only just now paying attention to it. Goes to show, there's always much to learn despite how far you've come.

This is a kickass bird I saw today!

It turns out that Merlin Bird ID has a life list.

I always told myself that I would start my life list when I was in my 50s (which is now), even though I saw a lot of really kickass birds in my 20s.

Somewhere there exists a slide of me standing in Florida scrub with a Scrub Jay on my head. It may be lost to time.

Next Sunday (5 May) is National Dawn Chorus Day in the UK. Now if you find getting up before dawn a bit of a challenge you can record dawn chorus on your mobile and save the file. I use "GOM Recorder". The resulting file can then be imported into the excellent Bird app "Merlin". This app can both capture audio and then identify the birdsong within a sound file.
