Open notebook with handwritten text from the post at the of the page with additional text: “Nathan Bailey’s Dictionarium Britannicum of 1730 defines ‘Mothering’ as: ‘A Custom still retained in many places of England, of visiting Parents on Midlent-Sunday; and it seems to be called Mothering, from the Respect in the old Time paid to the Mother Church. It being the Custom for People in old Popish Times to visit their Mother Church on Midlent-Sunday, and to make their Offerings at the High Altar.’ Bailey thus suggests a secularization of a medieval practice, so that people would offer gifts to their own mothers rather than to the church. In the eighteenth century, Mothering” seems to have been a regional custom. Correspondents to the Gentleman’s Magazine in the 1780s are very vague about this day, but believe it may have associations with food or drink. When ‘H.T.’ mentioned ‘furmety on Mothering-Sunday’ in a 1783 communication, another correspondent claimed to be unfamiliar with Mothering Sunday, and observed that others probably were too.” — Claire A. Interestingly, there are also Celtic creation tales that believed that the first woman came from an alder tree, though some Irish tales believe the first man came from an alder tree and the first woman from a rowan tree. It was therefore protective to hang a bundle of alder twigs above the crib of a baby boy and a bundle of rowan twigs above the bed of a baby girl. In Somerset, UK, it was thought that if a traveler passed through an alder copse, that he would never be seen again. An old creepy rhyme that captures this superstition of being trapped in the alder wood goes: ‘I caught the fitful sound,/ Wafted o’er sullen moss and craggy mound,/ Unfruitful solitudes, that seem to upbraid,/ The sun in heaven! Salad greens like lettuce and arugula that are eaten raw must be included in every veggie gardening plan, but in small amounts as fits their come-and-go natures. Cooking greens are different, because having a supply of frozen and dried greens means you can make anything from spinach-stuffed pasta to a cheesy chard casserole in record time. When planted at auspicious times, kale, collards, spinach, and Swiss chard will fill the growing season with the best greens you can eat (commercial growers often use systemic pesticides). I suggest starting in spring with kale and spinach, and growing chard through the summer. Then stock the garden with collards, turnips, and more kale for harvesting in fall, and plant more spinach for growing through winter under a protected frame. In this interpretation, the corpse is used to welcome spring and to affirm the re-awakening of nature. However, modern interpretations simplify the ritual: one example is merging two originally separate rituals and changing the time of the year at which they were celebrated. Moreover, even medieval chroniclers suggested that the custom had already evolved into a light-hearted, fun event and its original meaning had been almost forgotten. Researchers emphasise that Morana functioned not merely as a symbol of winter, but also as a Slavic goddess. The majority of these figures occur in small country churches and it is obvious that sculptors with varying skills turned their hands to carving them. Judging by their often very poor workmanship they must have been the work of local amateur carvers or stone masons who were not sculptors, rather than that of skilled craftsmen. It is precisely on account of the inadequate technical, often clumsy, execution that many archaeologists have refused to consider the sculptures as proper artefacts worthy of their attention. In the Middle Ages, artists represented her with mice running up her cloak or staff. They symbolized the suffering souls in purgatory who were under her protection. Gertrude’s father, Pepin, had advised three generations of kings. After his death, her mother, Itta, erected a double monastery at Nivelles and put Gertrude in charge. They welcomed many pilgrims, and Gertrude even gave the saintly Irish brothers Foillan and Ultan land upon which to build their own monastery at Fosses. Foillan commuted to Nivelles to celebrate Mass and instruct the monks and nuns in chants and Scripture. Gertrude herself knew the Bible by heart…When a pilgrim at Fosse learned that Gertrude was dying, he sent word that she should fear nothing, for Saint Patrick was already with God and waiting to welcome her in glory. Holding sweet gum pods in our bare hands, reflecting on the joy & pain the enslaved endured, we imagined them running barefoot with the abundance of sweet gum under their feet. Through the woods to the river, Harriet was leading them to freedom. We walked to the bank of the river & poured libation as we named our personal ancestors, Mama Harriet among them. Then we fell silent. In that silence, the wind picked up strength, blowing a soft but forceful presence in our direction. I couldn’t help but believe that Harriet & others we named were before us, welcoming our presence. Slowly, the forceful breeze ceased. I started doing a version of #morningpages recently and I'm really enjoying the practice. I'm being a lot less strict with the rules than some of the zealots claim is absolutely necessary but I do believe the burn-after-writing rule is key. It's only possible for me to write completely stream-of-consciousness with that safety net in place.

Really helpful for clearing and focusing my mind. Highly recommended.

Open notebook with handwritten text from the post on the top of the page with additional text: “The Navigium Isidis, the Vessel of Isis festival, was an ancient Roman celebration of the end of winter and a time to call upon the goddess to prod politicians and leaders into doing right by the people they governed or to stand aside if they were unwilling or unable to do so. This ritual is usually done in early March as part of the festival, but I think Isis will understand we have great need in this season…On the morning of the 5th of March, or when the need arises, bathe and dress in white. Prepare a small brass compass, some bay leaves and something to write on them with, and an unsprayed rose. Take your items to the nearest body (or a bowl of water at your altar). At your destination, write petitions for yourself and for the political leaders to do right by the people and the planet or get out of the way. Recite your petitions aloud, eat one of the rose petals and float the bay leaves and the rose on the water as an offering to Isis.
