Memories of the Alhambra (cont.)

Aside from requiring a suspension of disbelief if you know anything about AR, the story is exciting & twisty - mind-bending. Each eps shows the future & then the flashbacks fill you in on the details. This format makes you speculate & guess. It's fast-moving & with the time jumps & unexpected events, it does get confusing, but all is wrapped up nicely.

Many people wanted more from the ending, but the clues dropped throughout the series provide enough information to "trust" that the ending is complete. Great acting, fun action, & beautiful scenery contribute to making it one of my favorite Korean sci-fi shows so far!

Memories of the Alhambra
(2018 - Netflix 16 1:10 eps)

Another case of the synopsis on MyDramaList not doing justice. A tech CEO comes across a revolutionary AR(augmented reality) game while at a conference in Spain. His only clue to the game developer is a hostel, with a beautiful owner, in Granada. He begins to play the game to discover clues, but it takes a sinister turn. His company & his life are at stake as he tries to put things right, but they depend on someone trusting him. But who can believe in the AR world they can't see? The tagline is "Trust is the magic that changes the world, not the technology." Even the setting - Alhambra has emblems of faith(trust) - emphasizes this theme.

The Judge from Hell (2024)
(2024 - Disney+ 14 1:10 eps)

Justitia, the judge of Murderer's Hell sends a non-sinner to hell. Her punishment is to go to earth & find unforgiven, unrepentant murderers & send them to hell. She meets a detective who could foil her plans.

Great special FX, fabulous outfits, fun & relevant OST, & good writing. A lot of violence, but it fits the rage &/or vengeance of the perpetrator. Park Shin Hye in her best role yet! She did many of her own stunts. Kim Jae Young portrayed a vulnerable, tortured soul brilliantly.

"What is Justice?" is integrated into the story, with everyone judging everyone. Who & how should judging happen tie it all together. As Justitia becomes empathetic to the victims' suffering, her understanding of judging changes. The director took a weighty theme, with suspense & drama, but made it fun at times, & even teased the audience - very well done!

The Judge from Hell (지옥에서 온 판사)
Starring Park Shinhye (박신혜)
★★★★★★★★★★

Justice served.

This is the type of show that you wish is longer because they acted well, the cinematography was awesome, and the editing was excellent. But at the same time, you'll realize that it was perfect because they planned it to be exactly as short as it is, they knew it won't be good if it was longer.

Satisfying.

The Heirs (aka The Inheritors)
(2013 - 20 1:00 eps) REWATCH

A classic I 1st watched in early 2023. Knowledge of language & culture made it even better. The episodes flew by as the spoiled illegitimate 2nd son fell for the poor girl & had to fight to love her.

Phenomenal casting of 3 proven leads early in their careers & the supporting actors (see hashtags) who have all had stellar careers. A screenwriter with several other highly-rated dramas (The Glory, The King: EM, Goblin...) The 3 leads & the show won many awards.

It has a lot of wrist grabbing which was common at the time. But the depth that these young actors portrayed is astounding. Lots of character development & we come to understand their pain & the reasons for their actions. Excellent!

Doctor Slump
(2024 - Netflix, 16 1:05 eps)

High expectations resulted in disappointment. A very bland mystery could have either been finished quickly or gone crazy. The ML's parents were mentioned briefly, but that went nowhere. The writing was not well done.

Park Hyung Sik wasn't playing a character - it was just him - so some deep emotional scenes felt out of place. The chemistry was lacking. The FL's brother stole the show with his acting - he was terrific! And the 2nd couple was great.

It was a mental health service message: although the show didn't portray depression completely accurately, I felt the uplifting message of "It's okay to fail. You can try again." is a good one.

It's a cute, positive show in many ways. If you're looking for fluff, it's a nice, mostly-calm, watch. If you're expecting award-caliber stuff, you will be disappointed.

Few actresses make me involved in a #kdrama like the fabulous #ParkShinHye. She's truly versatile and can slay any role.
#KimRaeWon was instead a bit too cryptic in certain scenes, but he's a good actor too.

What I love about medical #kdramas is that I find many stories I can relate with because they're truly close to real life experiences.

The age difference when the two leads met made me complain a bit but overall it's a good drama.

Vote: 9/10

Flower Boy Next Door
(2013 - 16 0:50 eps)

Watched for Park Shin Hye. She played a depressed recluse very well. It was an okay watch. Typical "Flower Boy" drama - one-sided loves, love triangles, noble idiocy, cutesy stuff & fluff. The characters seemed fairly realistic, but there was some frustration with the FL not wanting to change. She thought she was satisfied with her lonely life.

Even though she almost always stays alone in her apartment, she ends up with 2 guys in love with her & neither are the one she thinks she loves. Unusual for a "Flower Boy" drama, both are decent human beings but very different characters. There are some fun neighbors, a bully to hate, a very fresh & unexpected 2nd couple, & some good music.

I'm putting it on hold and likely I'll drop it. It started well but now, 20 min into episode 7, it's repetitive and there aren't any new elements with every reiteration. It's getting boring.

Also the FL is too predictable, naive and not very smart. #ParkShinHye definitely played a better character in #Pinocchio
Generally speaking all the female characters are annoying, the only exception being the teenage girl.

From the director of #W I expected better 🙄

It's a well directed tv series with top notch actors and a compelling plot.
Despite the talented cast featuring #LeeJongSuk and #ParkShinHye as leads, I was a bit bothered, as it happens sometimes in k-dramas, by the iron clad integrity and perfect ethics of the characters. Particularly the male lead, coming out always as the hero of the situation.

Anyway it's a good drama, it's just not tailored to my taste.

Pinocchio
(2014 - Viki, 20 0:58 eps)

FL with Pinocchio Syndrome - hiccups start when she lies - wants to become a news reporter. It examines corruption w/in the media & how it affects society. It's a gripping story about the tragedies that result from greed. It is also about grief when someone close is not the person you thought they were. All the main characters struggle w/ this in their relationships & learn they can't change others, but they can change their perspective.

ML & FL both won multiple awards, top actors, popularity, & best couple. It won best soundtrack & Outstanding Korean Drama.

Every eps. was wonderfully paced. Side characters were marvelously written. Romance is sweet, but secondary to the reporters' story, where a decision means life or death. It's a great watch & deserves its reputation as a kDrama classic.
