Short video panning over the #landscape in #Sumapaz #NationalPark, #Colombia. This is around 3,700 m above sea level in one of the largest remaining areas of the #Páramo ecosystem. The swamp in the middle of the scanned area contained lesser #yellowlegs, Andean #teal and American #coot. The surrounding areas held Boyaca #antpitta, Apolinar's #wren, green-throated #helmetcrest, many-striped #canastero and Brazilian #GuineaPigs.

I guess I won't be using any of that potting soil anytime soon. There are three tiny eggs in the nest so far - I don't know how many the mama wren is going to lay before she starts sitting on them.

View into a milk crate that's turned on its side to store gardening supplies. There's a yellow plastic bag of potting soil with its top held closed by a large red clip. Behind the bag is a wad of moss and other plant matter that has been formed into a nest by a wren.

Tomorrow I will be attending (and hopefully speaking at) a special city council meeting in my town to address the public’s concerns about the recent death (ahem, not accidental) of an unhoused neighbor, James Oakley, who was crushed to death by a backhoe in one of their encampment sweeps. I am bracing myself for the what-about-ism bullshit comments and arguments I will undoubtedly hear from some of the City’s residents. I don’t know what else to be said other than that everyone deserves to live under a roof. Period. Everyone. Yes everyone.

Wrens are medium-small to very small birds. The Eurasian wren is among the smallest birds in its range, while the smaller species from the Americas are among the smallest passerines in that part of the world. They range in size from the white-bellied wren, which averages under 10 cm (3.9 in) and 9 g (0.32 oz), to the giant wren, which averages about 22 cm (8.7 in) and weighs almost 50 g (1.8 oz). The dominating colors of their plumage are generally drab, composed of gray, brown, black, and white, and most species show some barring, especially on the tail or wings. No sexual dimorphism is seen in the plumage of wrens, and little difference exists between young birds and adults All have fairly long, straight to marginally decurved (downward-curving) bills
