"But the message is clear. Publishers need to focus on audience strategies that exclude Google as a reliable source. The emphasis needs to be on non-Google channels, multimedia content, and direct brand traffic. In the next few years, many publishers will be unable to survive. The damage AI Mode will cause to the publishing industry will be felt for decades to come."

After I was done, the uncomfortable silence was expected, but still painful. AI Overviews causes some traffic losses, but are survivable for news-focused publishers. AI Overviews and Top Stories carousels are mutually exclusive, so publishers will still be able to achieve visibility and traffic on current news stories. Google's AI Mode, however, does not exclude news. You can ask AI Mode for the latest news, and it'll summarise it for you. You can ask AI Mode about a specific news topic, and you get a detailed answer. AI Mode will kill traffic to news as much as it will kill traffic to informational webpages. While articles are shown as sources in AI Mode, we all know the clicks won't happen there. And, contrary to AI Overviews, the quality of the answer in AI Mode is excellent. It's much harder (though not impossible) to get a wrong answer out of AI Mode, whereas it's trivially easy to confuse an AI Overview and have it spew out gibberish. Once Google finds the monetisation angle for AI Mode, it will roll out globally within weeks. I have little doubt about that. And the traffic apocalypse this will cause publishers will be extremely painful. Traffic from Discover will help soften the blow to a large extent, and this is why Google is rolling out Discover for desktop as well. Discover will become the cornerstone of Google traffic for most publishers. But the message is clear. Publishers need to focus on audience strategies that exclude Google as a reliable source. The emphasis needs to be on non-Google channels, multimedia content, and direct brand traffic. In the next few years, many publishers will be unable to survive. The damage AI Mode will cause to the publishing industry will be felt for decades to come. And the most painful part of this is that it's built on the publishing industry's output. The wholesale theft of content to build these LLMs is directly responsible for the loss of traffic publishers are now experiencing. Litigation will be slow and resolutions will come too late to save publishers. The time to pivot to a post-Google environment is now. | 122 comments on LinkedIn
The Lamidat drummer

During a visit to the Lamido, the regional leader in Ngaoundéré, me and my travel companions were entertained by a group of musicians attached to his court.
The drummer made a lasting impression.

Lamidat Ngaoundéré
Ngaoundéré is the largest city in the north of Cameroon, and it have all the facilities you expect from a regional capital. In addition to the Lamidat, there is a university, a big hospital, malls and markets, several mosques and churches and religious missionary stations run by Norwegian Lutherans, US evangelicals and Catholics.
The main industry in the area is keeping livestock, meaning large amounts of cattle everywhere. And some rather nice street food vendors with fresh meat on the menu.

Good relations cross religions
Norwegian Lutheran missionaries started out their activity here in 1923, building the first hospital in 1925. We spent some nice days as guests in the Norwegian missionary enclosure.
Their good relationship with the local rulers was key to get an audience with the RH Lamido and visit to the government quarters, the Lamidat. The Lamido ranks at the level of Emir, or Governor, in their region.

I was in this lovely #review of #ColePorter #songs. Six of us & a #trio. I got to do some #partnering, a hip lift, she was in a circle skirt, LOL. My favorite part was in #act two when the #character woman Anita was #belting some shit out, down center on the bottom stair & at just the right moment, they pushed from behind & the #audience saw for the first time that it was on wheels & when I saw it from the house in #rehearsal I got #goosebumps. Happiest decades of my life, doing live #theatre.
