"There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep Sea, and music in its roar:
I love not Man the less, but Nature more."
Lord Byron

Update: as predicted, our snow situation is looking grim, especially for the lower elevations. It finally froze last night but we've got a couple of days left of 10+°C daytime temperatures.
I just saw four robins. They shouldn't be here for another month or so. Poor buddies. What will they eat? They were pecking at the ground, but it's too soon for bugs and worms. It's -11 today. #ClimateDiaries #migration #robins #birds
I live on a mountain in NW Colorado and for the first week of February it is not supposed to dip below freezing.
Even at night, where lows are usually around -5°C.
Goodbye, snowpack!
There's been a bit of a dawn chorus striking up the last few days here, it's warmer than usual at this time of year but it's almost like the birds know that the solstice has passed #climatediaries

Thunder and lightning here. I have always loved thunderstorms. I’m grateful that this summer, although too hot, is not too dry. It’s rained here once or twice a week, which is a huge improvement over the droughts of the past few years. It also means I can breathe. The wildfires seem to be avoiding the area. Long may it last. #ClimateDiaries

Usually in mid April I get the first whiff of the Confederate star jasmine plants around our neighborhood, including the one I planted in my front yard to climb a telephone pole 9 years ago.
April 4, 2024, was the first day I smelled them this year.
This is a great way to travel through space and time, and get to know our planet better in a fun and beautifully designed way (and I can imagine it's a great tool for Earth Science teaching):

There's a polar vortex affecting France right now. It should be really cold, the coldest temperatures since 2018. But in central France (Morvan National Park) it's only -5°C and there's about 1 cm of snow. This place used to have a lot of snow every winter #ClimateDiaries #ClimateChange

Why is the AQI so bad right now? It’s raining. Usually that makes the air better. #AQI #ClimateDiaries
Westerners ostensibly on the left recreating the same racist mistake as their paler countryfellows talking about global migration from climate change as something only impacting the "global North" negatively because you can't open a map and see the geographical proximity between North Africa and Western Europe* for example is the factor why it's actually territorially closer countries in the "global south" that bear the brunt of climate refugees. Westerners.
*Feel free to examine the distance between bordering North American territories taking turns to be on fire as well.
Today is my first birthday when I’ll have to wear a mask to sit out in my yard. #ClimateDiaries #RespiratoryDisease
The air quality is finally good enough for me to go outdoors without a mask. Long may it last. #ClimateDiaries #CanadianWildfires
While the police arrest just stop oil protesters, I've just spoken to my sister who lives on the edge of the Campsies near Glasgow. There is a 5 mile wide wildfire going on right now, but you wouldn't known it from the usual news sources.

So Spring finally visited Lahore after 2 whole years of relentless heatwaves.
Im not going to get into how its also been unseasonally wet and cold and damaging to hundreds of acres of crops.
Im just glad I got to see these blooms on my rooftop after a looooooong time:
