Doctorow's recent dissection of "end stage capitalism" reads like an eulogy for a terminally ill economic patient that overdosed on its own supply of bullshit. Capitalism isn't just limping towards collapse. It's actively sprinting into a bonfire with its hair ablaze, deluded about infinite growth on a finite planet.

In a more sane and equitable world, we would be building AI-powered robots to do the dirty, dangerous, and dull jobs so humans don't have to; and we would all have more free time and a higher standard of living for it.
Instead, these sociopaths are building micro-managing tools for power-tripping middle managers. The silver lining here is that it's the managers that are going lose their jobs to the AI
