Oh and still struggling like mad to make my #jollaC2 work on a day to day basis.
I don't think the basic phone hardware is stellar which is not helping.
Anyone else persevering??

Jolla C2 just got a deep dive review from LinuxEasy. They looked past the specs and into what really matters: why this is a true community phone, and how that shows up in daily use.

My #JollaC2 also took nearly two weeks or so to ship (@jolla replied immediately when I sent them an email asking about the status though), so you indeed might need to be patient.
I am using it for about one week now as my main phone ("daily driver", but I can not replace my iPhone completely with it so far). I posted my experiences a few days ago and while it has some shortcomings one needs to live with at the moment, it also has a few nice features and advantages.
So overall it looks like it might work out for me.
Otherwise though I agree with many of the posts in this thread: People need to buy these phones now to help them move out of their niches. And that of course means that these early-adopters are willing to put up with shortcomings because they are valuing other aspects (like protecting their data) more than the slick, perfect experience e.g. an #iPhone or #Android phones offer.
One reason for #SailfishOS (Jolla's product) not gaining more traction is that apart from their #JollaC2 you can't simply buy a phone with it installed. And if #fairphone (and #shiftphone for that matter) won't do it until these systems gain more traction we're in a vicious circle. So what we need is an idea to get out of this!
How does using the #Jolla #JollaC2 (@jolla) with #SailfishOS for about a week as a daily driver now (with my old #iPhone at home as a backup)?
In general, it works much better than I had hoped after my experiences with other alternative #smartphone systems and it indeed is the first (and so far only) system that indeed works quite well. Also at around 285€ (https://commerce.jolla.com/products/jolla-community-phone) it isn't too expensive, so one can simply try it out.
There are a few limitations though:
* I am really missing biometric unlocking
* There is no predictive text input, so typing could be more comfy
* The UX experience sometimes feels strange (but no no-gos for me)
* It is not a snappy and fast device
* Audio quality is so-so
* GPS really needs a GPS signal, so no WIFI-based location
What is great:
* It is a real #Linux, so it has a #terminal, #sshd, you can e.g. use the #Nix package manager etc.
* Android apps are running in a container
* You can have different users to limit data access
Unfortunately there are nearly no high-quality native apps so far and the built-in ones are very basic (e.g. email).
But: The #Android compatibility layer is very good, the system comes with #Fdroid and #AuroraStore (#Google store front-end) pre-installed, so you can easily install practically all official Android apps.
Most apps work very well, some (especially banking) apps do not though as they complain that the system is rooted, so YMMV regarding the apps you need.
In general I am really happy with this system.
And: All the de-ggoglefied Android phones like the #Volla will always still remain just that: A more limited Android. SailfishOS offers a path towards powerful native (#Qt/#QML/#Cplusplus/#Python/you name it) based apps.
I am hoping that Jolla will provide a significantly more powerful device option and that some of the problems above will be solved.
But already now, even with the limitations above, if you are somewhat technically inclined (but without the need to fiddle with a command line unlike with the open mobile Linux distributions), want to get rid of #Google or #Apple for whatever reason, want a #Linux #smartphone, support a #European company from #Finland, this phone is really usable.
Jaahas, uusinta Sailfish OS:ssä toimivaa OP-mobiilia ei enää tueta, joten edessä on paluu avainlukulistan pariin. Onneksi työkaveri osti junalipun, niin pääsin pääkaupunkiseudulta kotia kohti ilman sählinkiä.
Really finding the Jolla C2 a tricky beast to use day to day, lots of hanging and frozen native apps, camera locking up the moment you open it. The Android apps are a little better but still unreliable. Banking app for the Nationwide in the UK does work!
Shame as they are pushing it as a daily driver now and I have to say its not, other than for phone calls and sms.
So I guess some would argue it is meeting the basic needs of a phone but no a smartphone.
Enpä olisi arvannut, miten vaikeaa on löytää itselle sopiva herätyskelloappi.
Ensin piti asentaa microG, jonka avulla Google Play Servicestä riippuvaiset appit, kuten pankkiohjelmat, toimivat. Siihen löytyi onneksi helpot ajantasaiset ohjeet. Sitten installoin F-Droidin ja Aurora Storen ja annoin niille tarvittavia lupia. Latasin OP-mobiilin Aurora Storesta.
Hurraa!

Most adventurous #fosdem travel in many years. #ICE #Cold #Coach. No working wifi.
And on top of that half of the crew stranded on the platform for last leg in Cologne since the train left while people were still queueing to get in.
But my trusted #JollaC2 daily driver swiftly got me in on the captive page to enable the hotel wifi now, so finally time to #scroll #huge #unread #fedi #feed which makes me ridiculously much #happier than expected.

Finally installed and trying the new #gecko browser 91.13.1 for #SailfishOS ported by @flypig on Xperia #XA2
Therefore we switched from Sauna-release (4.6.0.15) to Tampella release (5.0.0.43), which is officially only available for the new #JollaC2 but after dist-upgrade the XA2, phone and gecko browser is luckily working!
