I read the preface for #Life3Point0 by #MaxTegmark. I’m so excited to dive into chapter 1. #AI could definitely aid in world change like we haven’t seen in decades. Where do I apply?! Ha!
Interesting podcast if you want to keep up-to-date with the #Physics world (of which I’m a long term novice!)
Most recent episode on the ‘Universal Connector’ with favorite #DavidDeutsch
"Could we build a machine that can carry out any task? The meta-framework "Constructor Theory" suggests we might be able to make such a universal constructor. David Deutsch discusses the implications of such a machine for physics, for the economy, and for humans. Deutsch also talks about problems in funding for fundamental physics”

...we have no reason to believe vastly more complex, powerful, opaque, and uncontrollable systems are necessary to achieve these benefits. That innovation in AI, and reaping its untold benefits, does not have to mean the creation of dangerous and unpredictable systems that cannot be understood or proven safe, with the potential to cause immeasurable harm and even wipe out humanity.

#Musk & #Netanyahu returned to the broadcast for a panel discussion about #AI w/the MIT scientist #MaxTegmark & #GregBrockman, the president of #OpenAI, the co behind #ChatGPT & the image generator #DALLE. What happened next received scant media coverage, because reporters were there to see a #RightWing magnate hobnob w/a right-wing world ldr, not to listen to the 2 discuss AI w/some nerds.
The #TESCREALists declare their #AI #pause open letter to be a success. #TESCREAList #MaxTegmark says: "The letter has had more impact than I thought it would. [...] I felt there was a lot of pent-up anxiety around going full steam ahead with AI, that people around the world were afraid of expressing for fear of coming across as scare-mongering luddites."
And indeed it has been a success; the same #GuardianNewspaper article from which I lifted the quote above goes on to use the laughable #TESCREAL posture of #hyperintelligent #AI to storm past the very real current societal harms of #AI as outlined by @timnitGebru, @emilymbender and others, completely muddying the water.
"Fears around AI development range from the immediate, such as the ability to generate deepfake videos and mass-produce disinformation, to the existential risk posed by super-intelligent AIs that evade human control or make irreversible and highly consequential decisions."
That was the intent of the letter all along
Det var märkligt att Max Tegmark pratade så varmt om en så konstig bok i sitt Sommar i P1, tyckte jag. Här undrar jag lite mer systematiskt över den saken:

Having read (and mostly enjoyed) books by Max Tegmark, Stuart Russell, Ray Kurzweil, Brian Christian, Ajay Agrawal and Nick Bostrom in recent months, its been Melanie Mitchell (AI: a guide for thinking humans), D'Iganzio & Klein (Data Feminism) and Erica Thompson (Escape from Model Land) that I think have provided some of the most balanced and insightful perspectives on AI and data science.

The #AI pause letter signed by #ElonMusk has fake signatures, and been denounced as unhinged.
That's physicist #MaxTegmark's reputation buggered. His #FutureOfLife institute behind the open letter should have known better, and its incompetence will hinder credible criticism of AI/Machine Learning.
Have recently read 'Power & Prediction' by Agrawal, Gans & Goldfarb, and re-read 'Life 3.0' by Max Tegmark and 'Human Compatible' by Stuart Russell.
Anyone have other recommendations in these areas?
