What is so controversial about this?

Empathy is not something you choose to ‘do’ or ‘not to do’ regarding the Other, it’s a natural (wired up in the brain) thing to a less or greater extent. In my case, because of the way my brain is wired, I CANNOT HELP IT. I empathise, period. That’s all it is. Not apologia for wrong doers. IT is what it is.

Why can’t I make myself clear on this. I FUCKING HATE what Gaddafi, Putin, Netanyahu, Hitler, Hussein, et.al. Have done/are doing. It’s not about condoning anything or anyone, it’s an EMOTION that wells up unbidden when confronted by someone’s suffering (be it crime victims ot perpetrators being dealt with harshly). Roll back a few centuries and people use to go to the town plaza to watch lawful executions. That is not something I could never do because I’m an empath. IT IS NOT A JUDGEMENT ON THOSE THAT COULD WATCH. Personally I abhor violence of any kind. Even the kind that is ‘justified’, like self-defense. That’s just me. It not a judgement on anyone else.

Anyway, I’m done with this thread. I tooted myself hoarse.

A quotation from The Bible

But the man was anxious to justify himself and said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbour?’
Jesus replied, “A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. Now a priest happened to be travelling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side.
“But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. He went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on to his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him. Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said ‘and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have.’
“Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the brigands` hands?”
“The one who took pity on him” he replied.
Jesus said to him, “Go, and do the same yourself.”

Reflecting on casual meanness this season of "thanks," I'm reminded of Marcus Aurelius' #Meditations. His thoughts on handling ignorance and wrongdoing, well, I want to resonate with it.

Cooperation over division, pity over anger.

I'm trying my best, Marcus, but I think your thinking was more evolved than mine. So, maybe you can find some pity for me, too.

I have complicated feelings about this.

Much of the time, people use the word #inspiration to describe a person who they would otherwise express #sympathy or #pity toward. And both of these are #downward-facing. In this context, so is inspiration. The vibe is, "If this not-quite-person can do XYZ, what's /your/ excuse?"

I don't believe this was your intent; however, this is how a /lot/ of "inspiration" is marketed.

If you feel the need to compare yourself to someone, it might be better to compare yourself today to yourself yesterday. Or last week. Or last year.

"This is a confession. I love daytime TV. I smoke, even though I officially gave up years ago. I’m often late, and usually lie about why. And sometimes I feel good when others feel bad.

Obviously getting #desperate now, #Trump goes for the #pity play:

Bringing up his assassination attempt & the BS weaponization of the government: “I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things they say about me.”

give me a fucking break loser.
