Working from home today due to scheduled highway closure which means I could do yardwork early when i would normally be commuting! Woot!

Thinned the apple trees! Slightly more apples on the Blushing Delight than the Northern Spy.

Both trees look healthy though it looks like aphids have invaded the Blushing Delight with the assistance of the local ant population.

We got more alt-grass seed to finish off the last part of the driveway before its' morning drink.

Two fires, one on either side of #portAlberni

As of BCWildfire’s last night:

On the left/west side is Nahmint fire. It remains at 23 hectares and is “being held”.

On the right/east side is Labour Day Lake fire. It was 5 hectares last night but still listed out of control so expect it might be larger today.

If there was significant smoke from the east fire I should be able to see it from Alberniweather HQ. (Red arrow) Nothing yet.

Good news and Bad News

Good: PM2.5 levels rose slightly overnight in #portAlberni but not to dangerous levels. The Provincial station at Alberni Elementary got up to 14ug/m3. Readings over 30 are considered fair-poor.

Winds shifted back to ENE so Nahmint smoke should move away.

Bad: new fire East of Port Alberni on the slopes of Mt. Arrowsmith now 5 hectares. Still listed out of control. ENE winds will push this smoke toward city.

Waiting for BCWF update.

I'm planning on working from home on Wednesday just to completely avoid the possibilty of being stuck in a giant lineup of confused RV owners mixed with impatient locals. lol

Good that they are doing this periodically though. It appears the 'catchment' that they designed anticipating rockslides due to damage from the 2023 wildfire are proving their worth.

Good Planning for once! Imagine!!

Alberni Valley News · Port Alberni's train kicks off summer seasonBy Susie Quinn

Cooling our old house in summer. This house was built in 1940 so it has gone through all the stages and types of heating you can probably imagine.

We installed a ductless ("air source") heat pump a few years back. This was a revelation after 15 years of "window management" and fans to keep a lid on the intense heat of the Alberni Valley.

It has made a wonderful difference both for cheaper heating in winter and newfound cooling potential in summer. We only could get one big enough for two of three floors.

So basement and main floor have a register like this.

Today, on the first official hot day of summer it is:
Outside temp: 33°C
Top Floor (windows open, fans on): 30°C
Main Floor (windows closed HP set to 23°C): 25°C
Basement (HP set to 23): I would estimate 23°C

We also have a hybrid HP/Electric hot water tank in the basement that I have blowing its outlet air into the room for summer to help keep the temperature down in the basement.
