I always rather like seeing older Royal Mail post boxes sporting the initials of a long-ago monarch, such as this one on Gorgie Road sporting "VR".

Love this seaside-themed summer postbox topper on North Gardner Street in the West End of Glasgow, especially the jellyfish and the cute little octopus!
Wife's just sent me the latest postbox topper from near the school she's working at.
Most of the brackets have been broken over the years, and all that remains of many of then is just a nub on the top of the post box, but every now and then you come across one that's still complete (minus its sign, of course, as they are even rarer to find).
Have you ever seen a bracket on the top of an old post box, like the one on the left here (which is on Gardner Street in Glasgow), and wondered what it was for? Well, as you can see on the photo on the right (taken in Lennoxtown on the outskirts of Glasgow), it would have once held an enamel sign pointing to the nearest post office.
