This infant with barely any hair on its head glazing curiously at the sub-adult who was springing between the ground and the branch. With her moist eyes filled and reclining on the lap of its mother, who is busy in grooming herself, this infant perhaps already knew one day she will be jumping like her friend.
Lion-tailed macaque mothers nurse and carry their infants for up to a year, with weaning typically beginning at 5–6 months and completing by 9 months. Females reach sexual maturity at around 4 years, with the first birth often occurring soon after. The long inter-birth interval of 30–36 months, combined with delayed maturity, means population growth is slow—one reason this species remains endangered. Habitat loss and fragmentation in the Western Ghats further threaten their survival.
