We headed out and caught the T2 bus to Tre-Taliesin with all the intention of getting to Aberystwyth. We had our wet legs on to start with and although it wasn’t raining it was drizzling quite consistently. We started off and walked a pretty straight line from Tre-Taliesin toward Borth, we walking along the edge of one of the largest raised peat bogs in the UK, and boy did we know it lolz. Actually it wasn’t too bad but wet feet was the order of the day (day = morning), we were quite low and the end and start points were just a 20 foot difference, we did go up and down a little but only a small amount compared to our previous days :)

When we reached Borth we decided to take stock look up the cliff and wonder wether we really wanted to endure or enjoy the next section, we had enjoyed it all so far, but looking at the forecast for the afternoon and the fact that we already couldn’t see a great deal up the cliff we didn’t want to spoil the walk, we had a café stop to review. After this and the rain started to arrive so we decided that leaving the Borth to Aberystwyth section until we come back next time, this made today short but we aren’t just doing it to complete it, we are doing the path to enjoy it, so until next time we’re signing off.

Interestingly Borth and Uppingham have a connection here’s a BBC link about the connection really interesting, for those who don’t know Uppingham is a close town to us and I have reffed at Uppingham School (Rugby) a few times. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-67725871

We headed up out of Machynlleth which was soon disappearing behind us. Today was going to have a lot of ups and downs, and a lot of the woodland we walked through was extremely picturesque, some rivers running through them, lots of moss growing on the trees, very mythical looking, was expecting some Lord of the Rings character to jump out on us :)
The weather held out all day and no rain even though we heard several rumbles of thunder up the valley. We did have our obligatory ‘off piste’ moment but we soon corrected and got back on track, I have to say some of the signage could have been better. We met our first costal path walker and American who has also done the SWCP. It wasn’t;t as hard as yesterday and although you only get to see the estuary and coast toward the end it was a very enjoyable section.

It was just about lunch time so we ate lunch. From here the climb out of Aberdovey is quite steep especially after the flat beach walk we’d just done. The views at the top though were thoroughly worth it. From here we headed inland following the estuary looking across the Dovey valley and also over to Happy Valley. As we headed down toward the A493 you go through the edge of a wood and we heard a Cuckoo, Robin, Chiffchaff, Garden Warbler, Nuthatch, Willow Warbler and a Song thrush all in about 100 metres. Having crossed the road we then looped round to Pennal, here we had a decision, either wait for the bus about 45 mins or carry on to Machynlleth, we headed on up up up through Pennal Forrest, this was a looong drag but again when we appeared out of the wood and looked across to Machynlleth it was worth it. We carefully went down the steep hill then across the Dovey, I think this as about as far inland as we will go but as there are no crossing, for walkers or cars then this estuary stretch has to be done :) Had Fish and Chips before heading back to the chalet.

The views once we reached the top were great, as expected really. The walk today was really enjoyable, it got a little wet, Anne found a rather muddy and deep boggy section she almost fell in, laugh we nearly did, it was actually very wet as we came down towards Tonfanau and on towards Tywyn. We decided again to end the walk there and catch the bus back to Machynlleth. Coffee and a few rolls for lunch as we sat on the bus a bit damp and dripping. Did we still have a smile on our face of course we did. Weather looking promising for tomorrow so here’s hoping.

We had an option to do either a 5 or 10 miler today according to the weather, which was wet and windy so we opted for the shorter route and took the train back and had lunch on it quite comfortable :)
The walk even though it was wet and windy was still enjoyable and the start out of Fairbourne means a 1000foot climb up the side of Pen Y Garn, we then had a slow descent to Llwyngwril this is where we caught the train. Short but sweet.

A beautiful start to the day with little breeze and blue skies.
The train journey took an hour and then a short walk to the start, I’m glad it was a nice day because the zig zagging inland away from the coastline, there is a lot of this on the route, with the signs which weren’t great along this first 3~4 mile stretch so we had to keep checking the map vs our position this made it a little frustrating. We could still see the sea as we went inland and of course the mountains. We then hit a long stretch of road, again there is more than a bit of this, though it being a nice day and we were higher than the sea so we had good views both to our left and right, however with the cars going past us between 50~60 miles an hour, along with the noise, it did spoil this section a little.
We arrived into Barmouth where we sat on the sea wall having lunch. From here we then walked along the beach round to the estuary mouth where we went back inland and crossed the relatively recently refurbished Barmouth Bridge (the longest in Wales?), the bridge was busy with people, cyclists and even motorcyclists crossing it but the views inland are spectacular. Over the bridge we headed into Fairbourne, which had a very tempting par 3 gold course, we looped to the end of the beach and then headed back to the station to make our start on the next day a little simpler, I have a feeling the weather isn’t going to be as kind as today. Really enjoyable day.
