@dominic aw thank you for your message Dominic. Like a book indeed - it's been less than 150 days but it feels like a lifetime with all the services I tried out and the things I have learned 😅

I expressed an interest in self-hosting and I think it was @ilja who first recommended #YunoHost in November. The following month I got a VPS, installed YH in less than 5 minutes, and everything just worked...

I am on Mastodon already @_elena and I was hesitating between installing #Friendica and #Sharkey. But people recommended #GoToSocial because it's really lightweight and features-packed. That's what I did - and I'm very happy about it.

@elena hello to you. I begun to read all your posts from the beginning in your #GoToSocial self-hosted. Its like reading a book !

I self-host myself my blog and two other web apps with a web panel called #Webuzo. It use Softaculous to install apps. But I think to host my own Federated social app. And this panel doesn't support any ActivityPub apps. I already explored #Yunohost. Interesting to read your experience about it.

Why did you decide to use GtS instead Mastodon ?

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 117 (Titanic edition) 🛥️

When I think of all my efforts, trials and tribulations with self-hosting my Ghost blog, the first thing that comes to mind is the animated GIF from the movie Titanic, with present-day Rose ruefully saying « It’s been 84 years ».

I keep a diary - a printed calendar with notes about my #selfhosting exploits - to keep track of milestones and progress. It turns out the first time I tried to self-host Ghost via #YunoHost was January 20th (that’s when I installed it on my Debian VPS). So not that long ago. But it does feel like 84 years LOL.

My latest obstacle was a frozen Mailgun account because they flagged me as a spammer the first time I tried to send a blog post as a newsletter.

My account has been fully reinstated (as of Friday evening) so hopefully things will go smoothly now.

Triple-checking Mailgun <-> Ghost configurations is not my ideal way to spend a Sunday morning, but I should take advantage of my parents looking after my little one. Let’s go 👩🏻‍💻

Congratulations! It's a great idea to 'Degooglify', and self-hosting on Piwigo sounds like a good plan. It sounds like you have thought this through, and are reducing your personal carbon footprint while also avoiding all your images being slurped into AI training by your ISP, big-tech. You have privacy and media control there.

I hope you are using a platform like #Yunohost, which will help harden your server's security, too.

Good luck! Looking forward to hearing more!

🏕️ my adventures in #selfhosting - day 111 (quiet edition) 💤

Good morning Fedi friends!

I hope you had a nice weekend.

After backing up my two VPSs I am now staring at my #YunoHost dashboard thinking: now what?

It feels a little odd not to have to tackle any pressing self-hosting issues. Everything seems to be working well, including my manual installation of Ghost on a second (Ubuntu) VPS.

I'm now in maintenance mode.

I must confess in the past 24 hours I have spent some time browsing @yunohost 's app catalogue. So many fascinating things in there! But I am exercising restraint (for now, LOL!)

I'm very grateful for all the software I'm currently self-hosting.

On Debian (via YunoHost):

On Ubuntu:

I'm highly aware of my privilege and how lucky I am to be doing all this. But can I confess I'm a little bored? Thankfully I may have another big project on the horizon: upgrading my VPS and installing / self-hosting #PeerTube. But that will be for another week. Resting now and enjoying this sense of empowerment / digital sovereignty. Very grateful to be in this position.

Wishing you all a fantastic week!

I agree that software is political and support @yunohost putting in easter eggs like this. That said, it would help to make this clear that it's an easter egg, by #Yunohost and for what purpose.

For example, underneath the Nyan cat image it could say something like:

"This easter egg, brought to you by Yunohost on behalf of the International Trans Day of Visibility!" (last part linked)

This would encourage people to learn more *and* avoid having users think they've been hacked.
