Apple’s App Commodification and the End of Delicious Differentiation — Royal Icing https://royalicing.com/2025/apple-app-commodification
Here's the post I wish I had when I first started programming.
If you know someone just beginning to code (especially students), maybe pass this along?
Would've saved me a lot of head-scratching and "why didn't anyone tell me this earlier?" moments.
@simon genuinely inspires me—his method of learning is creative, persistent, and dedicated to sharing. His LLM year in review is a great example of talking about a burgeoning field in a thoughtful, low-hype, high-value way.
I'm really proud to present my fully documented source code for Elite on the Commodore 64.
This is the original 1985 source, recently released by Ian Bell, with every single line of code explained.
It’s a thing of beauty. Enjoy!

Beware UserDefaults: a tale of hard to find bugs, and lost data https://christianselig.com/2024/10/beware-userdefaults/
In macOS Sequoia, Apple has continued along the path of locking down the Mac. Running an app that has not been signed and notarised by a registered developer is now even more difficult.
In this article, I walk through what this means and how you can work around it.
There was only one bed.
The farmer put his sack of grain down. "I think we're in the wrong story."
"Who worried about crossing a river?" the fox said.
"Julius Caesar," said the hen.
"What?" said both farmer and fox.
"Never mind. Lets just work out how we all can get some sleep."

I’m really happy that people have been finding my advice for switching password managers useful!
That said, if you’re already using a password manager, you’re in good shape. After you take care of yourself, prepare for the upcoming holidays, where you might want to help your family and friends get started with password management for the first time.

At the height of One Million Checkboxes's popularity I thought I'd been hacked. A few hours later I was tearing up, extraordinarily proud of some brilliant teens.

Excellent TED talk about the current state of affairs regarding climate change. Must watch!
I feel like most in-house software is tacitly released under the Hot Potato Licence.
Spent some time to write a post about how we design apps must evolve. The state of apps has changed gradually over the years to the point where the phone app is no longer the center of all interaction, yet most design processes end up centering their design around that one platform.
High time we move away from that and move towards a more action centered approach, one that'd be far more useful when designing interactions for AI systems.
This is really great work, @1password. Truly.
I think a lot about what happens to my digital world after I die — as it has profound affect (effect? whatever) on my physical world. This is a really great and easy to understand guide that I encourage everyone to read, whether or not you're a 1Password user.
As a bonus, there's very little marketing — it's really a great resource.
