This works with Windows XPthrough 11, and I'm logged into it as I write! It's called Escargot, and it revives Windows Live/MSN Messenger. This is the original software, but it has been patched so that it connects to the escargot.chat server and not the Microsoft one. It is 100% free and accessible with NVDA and I'm sure JAWS as well. They also have projects for AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and ICQ, including for Android and IOS, and are working on a web client for MSN. (I don't know if AIM or ICQ are accessible with screen readers, as I have never tried them). Note: If you already have Windows Live/MSN Messenger on your system, you will still need to download their version and create an account. Your Microsoft, MSN, or Hotmail one won't work for signing in. Also, remember to click on RUN_AFTER_INSTALL.exe, in order to patch the program to the Escargot server.

I mean, these ain't like in the old days where a few Megabytes got you #Pidgin and other Multi-Protocol Clients of the old days where everyone had to implement bespoke, custom and incompatible and often completely undocumented, proprietary protocols like #ICQ, #AIM, #SIPE, etc.

  • Nowadays all these do have some kind of #WebApp or Web Interface one can just login (because none of them do proper #E2EE with #SelfCustody of all the keys!) so this should be way easier these days:
  • All they do is do HTTP(S) GET/POST so the most critical part is to attain credentials like a #Login #cookie and to basically run a console on i.e. #Firefox to reverse-engineer the "#API0"...

One thing that really pisses me off personally is the #regression in terms of #Messenger #Apps.

My personal distaste and dislike for #proprietary, #SingleVendor & #SingleProvider #services like #Signal ¹, #Telegram, #Discord ², #WhatsApp ³, #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams, etc. aside:

  • WHY is there no #CrossProvider #Messenger to handle that shite?

  • WHY does everyone of these shitty providers think people want to download their #bloated #WebApp that takes up triple digit Megabytes if not entire Gigabytes and will gobble up all the #RAM and #CPU each of them can??

This problem ain't new and already got solved for corporate social media ages ago! (Not to mention actually good messengers!)

So yeah, consider this a call for a @gajim / #Gajim or @pidgin / #Pidgin for garbage platforms!

  • Cuz back in the day we had way worse messengers yet people actually made #AIM, #ICQ, #MSN, #QQ, #IRC & #XMPP work just fine from one single "phat" client!

  • Can we please get that back?

So, I've been thinking a lot about #matriarchy and groups of people. From my own experience, sometimes groups with even the best of intentions can turn into pools of #ToxicMasculinity when males with egos start trying to run things and boss everyone around. I saw that happen with my own coven, when a member of #AIM started having the final say about everything -- often overriding our High Priestess (he was her consort). From what I've read about AIM on a national level (including excerpts from #KleeBenally's book, #NoSpiritualSurrender and #MaryCrowDog's #LakotaWoman), it seems to have been pretty commonplace. So much for Iroquois matriarchy, eh? (The coven-mate in question was Mohawk).

Today in Labor History June 26, 1975: Two FBI agents and one member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) were killed in a shootout on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Undercover FBI agents framed AIM activist Leonard Peltier for the two FBI deaths. During the trial, some of the government’s own witnesses testified that Peltier wasn’t even present at the scene of the killings. Nevertheless, a judge him to two consecutive life terms. Peltier admitted to participating in the shoot-out in his memoir, “Prison Writings, My Life in the Sundance.” However, he denied killing the FBI agents. He became eligible for parole in 1993. Amnesty International, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, and the Dalai Lama, all campaigned for his clemency. President Obama denied his request for clemency in 2017. On January 19, 2025, the last full day of his presidency, Joe Biden commuted Peltier's life sentence to home confinement. Peltier’s health had been declining for several years.
