Joku tuttunsa kuskasi meidät (meidän alle penkille laitettiin muovipussit, ettei auto kastu kokonansa) festarialueen liepeiltä perheensä (oli jossain reissussa) taloon (olimme kaikki hikiseen täysikäisiä; asui vielä siis kotonaan). Siellä laittoi saunan päälle, vaatteemme kuivauskaappiin, paistoi räiskäleitä, keitti teetä, petasi pedit johonkin talon huoneista.

No, jossain siellä sitten hytistiin litimärkinä, ja joku ohikulkeneista pysähtyi kohdallemme, ja kysyi, että eikö teillä ole mihinkään minne mennä? Ja oltiin, että eipä meillä ole, kun ei isotätikään (joka ei toki tiennyt, että olin Joensuussa), vastaa, ja muita ei täältä tunneta.

No, kurja ollahan siinä kuitenkin oli, ja olin ottanut mukaani Joensuuhun avioliiton myötä Österbottenista aikanaan muuttaneen hoonoa soomea puhuneen isotätini numeron. Mutta eihän hän keskellä yötä vastannut, kun jostain puhelinkopista yritimme soittaa (niin, ei ollut vielä kännyköitä kaikilla silloin).

Olimme tuon aikaisen tyypillisesti lähteneet Stadista vain välttämättömät repussamme; tyyliin pesutarvikkeet, sis. kuivashampoo, jos suihkutilaisuutta ei tule vastaan, vaihtoalkkarit, lompakko ja alkoholia. Juu, ei me tuolloin otettu edes telttoja tai makuupusseja; nukuttiin jossain syreenipuskassa sitten, jos alkoi väsyttää.

Today's real champion is this one. One of my PC Engines APU devices - I don’t remember the exact year I bought it, probably 2017.
It worked at my home as a router/firewall with OPNsense for several months, then in 2018 I installed it at a client’s site, "as a temporary emergency solution". Still running OPNsense, always kept updated, and it hasn’t missed a bit since then.
During a severe thunderstorm, the access point and switch connected to it were fried, but it kept going - silently and reliably. Zerotier, Wireguard, port forwarding, bandwidth graphs - all handled in a hot office, often with the air conditioning turned off during holidays.
It did everything, and it still works.
The client moved to a new location this morning, and the APU was replaced with a more powerful device (in anticipation of a future Internet upgrade). I decided to take it back with me (technically, it’s still mine) - they couldn’t find the power adapter, probably still packed in boxes, but up until 07:30 this morning (the last time I connected to the server behind it via VPN), it was perfectly reliable.
I’ll probably keep using it - I have others - maybe in the office as a file server with two attached drives.

We're not only seeing super powerful workstations from the likes of #System76, but now we're seeing ARM #motherboards coming out with #PCIe lanes.
Let that sink in.
It's only a question of time when #NVIDIA and #AMD release drivers for ARM, or indeed even SoC's for general consumption.
Don't get me wrong, currentt AMD #APU offerings still kick ass and you shouldn't be afraid to buy one, but a change is coming
