A blue jay looking at you!!
The Displacement
This morning, I caught a small drama unfolding at the old bird feeder. A pigeon was descending, wings outstretched, while a blue jay looked on. At first glance, the image seemed only mildly interesting—not exactly award-winning photography, but that’s not what I’m after anyway. What caught my attention was the story it told. The blue jay, momentarily in charge of the feeder, was about to be displaced by the larger pigeon. You could see it in the jay’s posture—it knew exactly what was coming.
Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.
Blue Jay Becoming
I spotted this fledgling blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata)—yes, I know, another blue jay. But when they show up, you have to admit, they really do command attention. What caught my eye with this one is its crest: it fades beautifully from black at the tips to blue through the middle, ending in a soft gray right at the forehead. There’s something striking about that subtle gradient—like it’s wearing a little crown of transition.

Crown in the Making
This blue jay (Cyanocitta cristata) perched in a tree above me, offering a chance to capture it from an unusual angle. It was actively grooming, its beak working methodically through its feathers. I was struck by how slender its neck appeared—perhaps a sign of youth or evidence of a recent molt.

(Blue jay)

Blue Royalty
I'm a Dodgers fan myself, but I know there are plenty of Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata) enthusiasts out there. As for baseball teams named after birds, the ones that come to mind are the Blue Jays, the Orioles—and, of course, the Cardinals.
