The jury in a sexual assault case against five former world junior hockey players in London, Ontario, has been discharged. The case is now proceeding with just a judge. On Thursday, a juror sent a note to the judge that outlined concerns that two defence lawyers were whispering to each other and laughing "as if they are discussing our [jurors'] appearance" as they entered the courtroom. All five defence teams asked for a mistrial or for the jury to be discharged, citing perceived "prejudice" of the jurors against the defence. Here's more from @cbcnews on the many problems that have plagued the high-profile prosecution, including an earlier mistrial caused by a defence lawyer talking to a juror during a lunch break.

CBCWhat the jury didn't hear, other stunning turn of events at trial for 5 ex-world junior hockey players | CBC NewsIn a stunning move, the jury hearing the case against five former world junior hockey players charged with sexually assaulting a woman in a London, Ont., hotel room in 2018 was discharged Friday and the case is now proceeding with just a judge. That means we can now report more of what's happened since proceedings began in the last week of April.

These numbers are bunk, there is no divorce lawyer that costs less than $250/hr that I was able to find, and that was a useless recent grad that gloriously fucked me over and charged me 10k for it. Divorce court in Canada has no links to justice, rather it is a scam to enrich lawyers that get their jollies fucking over people in crisis.

Don't ever get married in Canada unless you are burdened by too much money.

Musing about employment law today....do you think probationary clauses in employment contracts provide any real benefit to employers in Ontario?

I am inclined to think they do not since the ESA minimums still apply. Moreover, a poorly drafted probationary period clause risks tanking the entire employment agreement. #law #canadianlaw

Sure, create yet another group to reduce the additive victimization from the deviant legal system instead of fixing the system of harm. I've seen this strategy fail for decades, perpetuating harm.

“Now, you’ve got to go into a legal system that doesn’t necessarily believe you at every step. You have to prove yourself. They’re practically re-victimizing the victim in a lot of these situations.“

Fun fact about Canadian "Law":
very very few of the justices making criminal law judgements have training or any experience in Criminal Law. Most are lawyers from other law fields that then bring their absence of experience into the criminal courts to make life altering decisions.

I can't decide if its worse to have your life destroyed by this deviant colonial system of harm ,or to learn why the system has so much injustice and that nobody is fixing it.

I was blown away when I found out that the Canadian courts have "unwritten constitutional rules".

I believe if the courts can operate on invisible ink, so can my work contract: I now will use my "unwritten work rules" when they try to task me with an unpleasant task.

Given the endless harm of Can Family Law, I now understand it too has an unwritten rule: create harm to children and desperate families for profit with no oversight.

For over five years I was the co-owner and in-house counsel of a business that owned two franchised restaurants in the Ottawa area.

I learnt far more about business during those five years than I ever learnt practicing law in a firm.

If you are lawyer, I cannot recommend strongly enough spending some time as in-house counsel, you'll gain incredible experience that will make your advice more valuable and relevant to your clients. #law #business #canadianlaw

An online petition calling on the Canadian government to revoke Elon Musk's citizenship has been signed by more than 300,000 people (when told this on X, Musk replied, in a now-deleted post, "Canada is not a real country"). But according to experts, that's highly unlikely to happen. @cbcnews explains why.

CBCWhy Canada can't strip Elon Musk of Canadian citizenship | CBC NewsMore than 263,000 Canadians have signed a petition to strip billionaire Elon Musk of Canadian citizenship. But to do that, the Canadian government would have to change the law.

I have noticed that LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot continue to be absolutely rubbish for any form of Canadian case law research. However, they are much better when asked to solely focus on statutes.

I suspect this is because the LLMs have not yet been properly trained on case law and there may be copyright issues with accessing this training information, whereas statutes are freely available from government websites. This is just speculation. #ai #law #canadianlaw

This article highlights one bit of Trump's trade war that he may not have accounted for --- the relative independence of Canadian provinces to take actions like this without Canadian federal government approval. This is something that is largely impossible in the US (due to our constitution), but in Canada, it is a different story.

Also --- worth pointing out is that Ontario Premier Doug Ford is an extreme conservative. The fact that he is doing this says a lot about how bonkers Trump's trade war is.

"The Harper Legacy in Canada". Reading this special issue of constitutional law scholars' assessment of Harper's impact on Canada is high on my to-do list as preparation for debunking pending Conservative & Poilievre propaganda, and remembering why we wrote the word "Harper" on our stop signs. Because he was the worst prime minister, ever.

While it probably won't be an issue for 99% of users, just wanted to post another reminder that will be moving our server (on which this instance is hosted) from the to , in response to the hostile administration of Elon Musk and Donald Trump. This was planned back in October, contingent on the election results, and will be completed by the 20th.

We will be stationed in , where the admin lives, so expect more options for speakers, which will be implemented alongside and as we work to cater better to and (including ). We will also be subject to , which should not be an issue, as the main difference would be hate speech, which we already explicitly don't allow.

Just letting the know what's happening here. Otherwise, expect business as usual: we will remain committed to providing an open and friendly large-server option for workers and enthusiasts in .
