Amid turmoil over tariffs and the relationship with the United States, Canada is facing challenges from within. Conservative Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta, says she will hold a referendum on provincial separation in 2026 if citizens gather the required signatures on a petition. While Smith says she isn't herself supportive of Albertan separation, her government last week introduced legislation making it easier for a referendum to happen. In her address, Smith claimed that Liberal rule has turned Canada into an international laughing stock. First Nations leaders have spoken out against the separation movement, saying Alberta doesn't have the authority to negate treaties that predate the province. Here's more from @GlobalNews.

The Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, is projected by @cbcnews to have won the Canadian federal election. Votes are still being counted, and it's too early to say whether the Liberals will form a majority or minority government. Follow CBC's liveblog here for the latest.

#New webpages that offer lite versions, with no images, are great. I prefer #CanadianNews whenever possible. I rank my 3 lite news page sources as
1. #CNN
2. #NPR
3. #CBC

CNN offers a nice long list of news to read, their page is ugly but works so nice with #FireFox reader view.
NPR has less news is great layout on its own and good in reader view.
CBC is my preferred news source, and it is the most flexible but, it does not work in reader view.

Canada goes to the polls on April 28. Investigative journalist @justinling has a new series, Chaos Campaign, following the issues and events leading up to the election. Here's his story about how the different parties want to address one of the country's most challenging problems — the housing shortage. His conclusions: The Greens and New Democrats: Nonsense hokum. The Conservatives: Good, but incomplete. The Liberals: Great, but can we trust them? "The only thing to do now is to absolutely grill your local candidates on how they will, personally — not as a party — advocate for strong solutions to the housing crisis," Ling writes.
"We got into this mess because of endemic buck-passing and the ability for a small group of anti-development yahoos to hijack the conversation. The only way out of this is to demand accountability and make it clear that we want more homes."

Dadaist Report on Recession of Gu~1f0/riy)j

If you speak like a mad milliner, you will be considered to be following the rules. Rules. Rules. Rules. There will be no impact on regulations! If things get worse, they will get even worse. We have heard a lot about this recession at the centre pond pool’s polite poodles’ playground, while gathering green goats eating groats. Groats! Groats! Groats!

More #2SLGBTQ+ #Americans looking to move to #Canada since #Trump's re-election

A 2SLGBTQ+ aid organization says there was a massive spike in the number of Americans looking to leave the country immediately after U.S. President Donald Trump returned to the White House.

#SwathiSekhar, director of protection initiatives at #RainbowRailroad, said the group received nearly 1,200 inquiries from 2SLGBTQ+ Americans on Nov. 6, 2024, alone, after getting only about 700 U.S.-based inquiries up to that point in 2024.

"This is really the most requests for help that we've received in a single day from any country," said Sekhar. "So that really says a lot. About half of those individuals who requested help were trans individuals, a mix of both #trans men and trans women."

Rainbow Railroad says it has received just over 1,800 requests for help from the U.S. so far this year — an 1,100 per cent increase over the first two months of 2024.

Canadian immigration lawyers are also reporting a rising number of inquiries from American members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community looking to move to Canada.

#Immigration lawyer #AdrienneSmith: "The overall sentiment that I'm hearing right now is just the kind of terror and speed that they feel like their rights are being stripped. You can hear the fear in people's voices when they're calling,"

An online petition calling on the Canadian government to revoke Elon Musk's citizenship has been signed by more than 300,000 people (when told this on X, Musk replied, in a now-deleted post, "Canada is not a real country"). But according to experts, that's highly unlikely to happen. @cbcnews explains why.
