A mate moved to Wieambilla, I was checking out their new town in Google Maps – and noticed all these drilling pads in close proximity to each other.
I have not worked as a geologist in Australia for 20+ years, so was not sure of the reason for them.
Looks like they are related to coal seam gas (CSG) mining, aka methane - and drilled before the ready advent of horizontal / drilling drilling (or cheaper to throw in a bunch of old school wells.)
The PhD submission linked above, although older, gave some good background.
It is a very distinct set of features on the landscape – and brought back a lot of memories of a variety of previous professional ‘lives.’
