It wasn't #Unix, and it was in the year 2001. But I vividly remember running #Linux on a #Compaq #iPaq (Model H3600) my former employer gifted to me when I completed my training.
I was already done with #Windows at that time, so I ditched #Microsoft #PocketPC in favor of Linux. The distribution was called Lisa, IIRC. I had to invest into a sleeve and a 128MB Compact Flash card to enable Installation of a full LAMP-stack... had to compile it on the device...

Sufficiently Amusing AuthorMWL Book Quote Bot (@quotebot@io.mwl.io)If you're ever in a position where you need to prove that you are Alpha Geek among the pack, running Unix on a 1998 palmtop will almost certainly do it.

Claimed!

Anyone want some old computers?

I bought a batch of old Compaq Presarios awhile ago. I was going to repair what I could and strip parts out of what I couldn't, but I just don't have the time. I'd like to see these go to a retrocomputing enthusiast who can do something cool with them!

Three laptops work:
1625 - boots, has a weird screen flicker
1210 - boots, red splotches on LCD
1220 - boots, keyboard has some dead keys

In pieces:
1610 and another unknown model (series CM2060).

I have batteries for all of them (bad, naturally) and one charger. The plastics are *really* bad on these, so be warned repairs will be challenging.

Free to the first person who claims them, but I do ask you cover shipping (about $40-50). I can take venmo or zelle. Please reply to this post so other folks can see if they've been claimed!

#hp #compaq #windows
it says in system info that the model is
"hp compaq 4000 pro small form factor pc", or that's at least what hp says it is, but I can't find any "ethernet controller" drivers there (support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/c), and device specs say it can do ethernet

also visited some support page where some guy asked for help regarding this exact issue, but the "solution" was just a dead link :(

would greatly appreciate any help, otherwise just a lil rant abt windows bad longevity n stuffs :P

Continuing the laptop theme, here are some first-time appearances of laptops. "Jungle 2 Jungle" sees the first Compaq LTE Elite in the database, along with a Compaq Prolinea 3/4. "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" offers two new comers: the Dell Latitude E5520 and HP Stream (as well as the classic Casio PB-100). Finally the Acer Extensa 5620 makes its first appearance in "Bad Ass".

For a friend, I installed the latest version of Linux Debian (12.8) on a machine that is starting to be old: a Compaq 6005 with an AMD Athlon II. The machine is operational and appears to be fast even on the web. As it is 32-bit and Firefox will stop supporting 32-bit in January 2025. Chromium was a good alternative.

@DL1JPH exactly that

It's the reason banks still roll their systems on them and why I know the story if a #COBOL developer who literally fixed their mothers' code that was older than they are...

  • Same reason why #hp still has to maintain #OpenVMS & #VAX systems, as #DoD (on behalf of the #FAA) demanded them to uphold the open-ended, single-side - only cancellable contract that #DEC signed and that they inherited throigh #Compaq's acquisition of DEC, as the #ATC Systems of the U.S. runs off those machines...
