Ok, a question for #database #dbms nerds. Many years ago I worked on a join order optimizer that used a heuristic formula to estimate the number of rows produced by an equijoin, based on the number of rows in the two tables being joined and the number of distinct values in the join keys. This formula came from an academic paper, but I can't remember what the formula was or find the paper. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Boosts appreciated...

When using a #MySQL database, is it possible in one go, when adding a new column to an existing table, to use one default value for existing columns (initial migration, so to speak), but another for every new row going forward (real default)?
Scenario: I want to set the value in pre-existing columns to true, but in all subsequent rows to false by default.

I found good magazine osp.ru and been reading about types
of databases by version of Stonebraker/Pavlo. They
think that relational SQL will absorb other types.
Thematic chatbots that will clarify the request and form
an action are promising. Cloud DBMS and lakehouse are
actively growing absorbing for ex. API Pandas DataFrame.
Article about Business trend: *Composable Enterprise* -
platforms, marketplaces, ecosystems, API-economic. Focus
on wide-profile and multifunctional specialists. Flat
structure. Agile and modularity give 20-30%
boost. Clouds and microservices.
I enhanced Dired, Outline, Org and Tab key in Emacs.
- I wrote an article about Tab key configuration for
EmacsWiki site.
- in Dired I added ability to compare windows with
diff-buffers
- in Org I enhanced navigation up and down with catchng
error from org-next-item and using org-forward-element.
- I released two packages to MELPA.
I hear from everywhere about unemployment in IT.
