The problem here is there are many people who believe that they are doing the good simply by opposing everything.

#Linux is too big today to be solely maintained by people in their spare time. Even #Devuan takes many things from #RedHat and #EnricoWeigelt won't dismiss the previous contributions from corporations to #X11 / #Xorg. theregister.com/2025/07/12/the

Stability, simplicity (flexibility and relatively lighter on resources).

I'm running #Devuan (stable) with bare openbox for a distraction-free desktop environment and server instances.
I did do a few manual configuration changes (wireless, nfs mounts to servers) but one can always install GUI packages as alternative.
Also, the testing branch has more recent packages and is still quite stable if need be.

After trying various #Ubuntu #linux flavors on my old laptop with only 4Gb of RAM, I needed to find something lighter that didn't use up more than half my RAM, but I still wanted disk encryption and working hardware keys and trackpad. I tried #Devuan (I pronounce this Dev-one) and it is awesome! Super #lightweight and looks great. I only needed to add a tap-to-click config and install xfce4-screensaver, otherwise happy with the defaults.

I agree that staying with Debian based distros saves a lot of time, as most things are documented really well and there's .deb packages for most software you'd want.

Devuan is essentially Debian without SystemD.

Here's the link to Devuan's website:

I am currently using it on my main workstation, laptop and some servers.

I tend to put #Devuan on to older machines with less RAM.

Selecting a low fat window manager makes a big difference. Staying away from gnome3+ and kde apps in general will help a lot too.

Alternatively you could look at #NetBSD

I have been a linux user for more than 20 years, and a Debian user for a good 15 years now. For the first time, I feel like something is off. systemd feels like a Frankenstein that does not belong. It makes the system feel brittle and vulnerable.

Perhaps some more reading is in order. But I am also starting to look into things like Devuan.

Thoughts? Interesting takes and links?
