Spent all day calling #California #EDD a few dozen times to try to get my family leave processed (note: they haven’t paid me at all yet in the 4.5 weeks since I filed for PFL). Finally got onto the hold line (instead of just getting “the maximum number of callers has been reached, please call back later”) about 25 minutes ago. The hold music plays for 45 seconds, then a message tells me “all representatives are still busy, please continue to hold, expected wait time is 1 minute”. Every minute.

Why can’t I do this online? Why can’t they do a callback instead of a hold line? Why do they have a limit of how many people can be on hold at once, necessitating that I call them dozens of times? Why does it keep telling me the hold time is “1 minute”? California has 1737 FTEs working in this specific department; how many do you think it would take to make this actually work? 3000? 5000?

My study examines the experiences and expert knowledge of ADHD adults and their pursuit of a doctoral degree. ** You can help close a gap in ADHD lived-experience and educational-outcomes research! ** PROSPECTIVE PARTICIPANTS English-speaking adults of all backgrounds who: 1. Identify as an ADHD adult* and either: - Earned a doctorate requiring a dissertation/thesis (PhD, PsyD, EdD, etc.) - Are currently a doctoral student or doctoral Candidate - Began but discontinued doctoral studies for any reason 2. Can attend four or five 90-minute small-group conversations via Zoom in Oct/Nov 2023. * "Identify as an ADHD adult": Either having sought clinical confirmation of ADHD or self-identified. No medical documentation will be required for participating in the study. In the small-group conversations, you will be invited to share stories from your life experience, to respond to stories shared by others, and to collectively discern meaning from your group's life stories. The research conversations will be recorded and transcribed for analysis, and pseudonyms will be employed in the dissertation, at participants' discretion, to protect anonymity. Efforts will be taken to assemble research groups reflecting diversity in gender identification, ethnicity, type of doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, EdD, PsyD, etc.), academic discipline, economic background, geographic region, and age/generation.
