Dr Victor Olaiya & his All-Stars

amf.didiermary.fr/victor-olaiy

Dr Victor Olaiya is considered the bridge between Ghanaian highlife and what would become Afrobeat.

His musical style was influenced by James Brown, with horn parts harmonized in Brown’s style, as opposed to the mostly unison lines of Afrobeat. The music includes the swinging percussion of Tony Allen, but not the syncopated style that [...]

amf.didiermary.fr/rss-club/gwo

This old HighLife song “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche” by Gentleman Mike Ejeagha & his Trio, a classic released in 1983, became popular again after a skit of comedian Brainjotter on Instagram and now TikTok. That’s all about the chorus: the catchy “gwo gwo gwo ngwo!” […]

Un huis clos spatial fascinant, dérangeant, où Robert Pattinson et Juliette Binoche explorent les tréfonds du désir et de la survie.

Vous en sortirez changé… ou hanté.

E.T. Mensah & His Tempos Band – FomFom

amf.didiermary.fr/et-mensah-te

The original “Tempos” band was formed in 1946 as a “jam session” group by some European soldiers stationed in Accra. It played for army dances and at the Accra club. Over time, African musicians replaced the European ones, until finally it became an all-African band. Mensah joined the band in 1947. […]

Been listening to this album all day, a recent release from Berlin-based Philophon label, "A.O.E.I.U. (An Ordinary Exercise in Unity)" by #FlorenceAdooni. I'm hearing #highlife and frafra gospel, but also #SpiritualJazz and experimental sounds that are hard to categorize. Vintage & futuristic at the same time.

When the first single "Mam Pe'ela Su'ure" came out a few years ago, I was obsessed. #MaxWeissenfeldt's production is so extremely lush and beautiful.
