SelfHosting #Homelab
Mastodon vs. GoToSocial Test
https://me.klein.ruhr/@matthias
Warum GoToSocial?
- geringerer Ressourcenbedarf als Mastodon
- perfekt als SingleUser-Instanz
Was ich teste
- Performance im Homelab
- Föderation
- Mobile Apps
Implemented #Pangolin and liking what I see so far. Will gradually migrate services over from HAproxy to Pangolin, so I can get rid of my port-forwarding punctured firewall.
Although technically not needed, but bought the "limited supporter" key for 25 USD to support the program.
Interesting article about #selfhosting the actual cause and a possible evolution.

What I'm missing is that #BigTech delivers our devices, especially when it comes to #smartphones. So in addition to a #community driven cloud, we would need free #smartphone OS's as well.
Current #homelab, consisting of nothing but Raspberry Pi's and equipment retired from the company I work for. Dell T3500 as a NAS with nextcloud, photoprism, and jellyfin. Two Dell 9020's, one as my k3s cluster running AWX, the other running splunk and gitlab. 9 Raspberry pi's, 5 powered via PoE from a retired Fortinet firewall device running redis, mysql, haproxy, wireguard, pihole, bind, isc-dhcpd, vaultwarden, tandoor, gotify, portainer... Dell Laptop as my entrypoint.

I love my self-hosted services, but this article "The future is NOT self-hosted" makes some good points
So I'm learning that "home labbing" is really just typing in your password over and over and over and over and over...
Using Home Assistant OS, I wired up Whisper for speech recognition, Piper for voice responses, and Ollama for the LLM brain — all running on my own machines, stitched together with the Wyoming protocol. I could literally talk to my smart home, and it talked back. All offline, all private.
Sometime back, I got obsessed with the idea of running my own voice assistant — fully local, no Google, no Amazon, no "cloud intelligence." Just me, my wife and our server(s)...
So I built Marvin.
Testlabor aktiviert!
Hier entsteht gerade mein GoToSocial-Playground.
So I finally got around to setting up Borg Backup. Yeah okay, it’s very good. Much better than whatever the fuck I was trying to do before.
What a Linux noob!
One of the signs that someone has a #homelab at this address? A box labeled 13 x 1.8TB. Yep. I #selfhost and am upgrading some storage, plus getting some spares.
They’re 10K RPM SAS drives. I hope they aren’t 520-byte formatted, though they probably are. Takes ages to format 13 drives to 512-byte blocks.
Auditing my network,
18 Raspberry Pi of various vintages.
They are all doing useful things, but
1. I should be able to consolidate a bunch of them
2. How many of them can I move to network booting so they are not dependent on SD Cards.
Happy #Sysadmin Appreciation Day to all my fellow admins, engineers and individuals who make it all “just work”.
And another Server migrated over from Hetzner to @netcup . Again, absolutely flawless and working great :-)
Services now migrated to Netcup:
- Uptime-Kuma
- BIND (secondary authoritative DNS for my zones)
- Forgejo (Git forge)
- Personal Website
- Librespeed (Speed-Test Node)
- Bsky PDS (Personal-Data-Server for BlueSky)
- Atuin (Shell-History Sync server)
- Anubis (Anti AI Crawler protection)
- Authentik (SAML/OIDC SSO Server)
- Wallos (Subscription tracker)
- stepCA (x.509 PKI CA)
Running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 (aarch64) with Podman and behind a traefik reverse-proxy. All containers managed via Systemd and quadlet files (/etc/containers/systemd/*.container)
Services remaining on Hetzner:
- OpenShift lab
- Mastodon burningboard.net
- Ansible RHCE Lab/Learn environment
- freeIPA/IdM Server and Red Hat Satellite
Step by step getting my (vast) infrastructure sorted and onto energy-efficient ARM servers at Netcup :)

Over the years, I’ve learned a lot from trial, error, and a few coffee-fueled rabbit holes while setting up all my self-hosted services.
Now I’m wondering… would anyone be interested if I started sharing tutorials?
Could be: Blog posts
Video walk-throughs
Docker setups
Reverse proxy tricks, identity management, and more
Everything from “click here” beginner guides to advanced stuff like SSO with Authentik or federated Matrix!
Let me know what you’d like to see — and if there’s enough interest, I’ll start posting!
