@John_Loader Tragic. As is the case with most countries described by the West as 'third world' or 'under developing countries', it is western monetary institutions that must carry a lot of the blame

"Presidents and governments came and went, each and every one borrowing money from the #IMF, the #WorldBank and the #EuropeanInvestmentBank. They all paid lip service to the conditions attached to these loans but never had any intention of implementing them. The IMF and the #EU continued to preach a gospel of #liberalism and pretended to believe reforms were being enacted. Meanwhile, private investment – both domestic and foreign – declined."

On the Hebrew University’s invitation to Javier Milei and why it shouldn’t surprise anyone

#Argentine President Javier #Milei is expected to arrive in Jerusalem tomorrow to speak at the Hebrew University. Miley is admired by the Israeli right for his unwavering support of Israel and his promise to relocate the Argentinian embassy to #Jerusalem.

Since taking office, Milei has slashed over 70% of public university budgets, vetoing a law to ensure adequate funding and accusing faculty members at the University of Buenos Aires of corruption. The university’s budget has seen a 26% cut while the Argentinian secret service budget increased by 68%. Over 60% of university employees are now below the poverty line. While austerity measures might be argued for, Milei's actions appear to be a deliberate attack on education, #liberalism, and potential political opposition.

There have been growing calls to boycott the Hebrew University. Two Dutch universities have recommended suspending academic partnerships, citing the institution’s complicity in Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

The Hebrew University was found to be directly training Israeli military intelligence officers through the Havatzalot program. The university develops military technologies used in #Gaza through Talpiot program. The campus was built on illegally occupied Palestinian land in East Jerusalem and armed soldiers attend classes on campus, creating militarized environment.

New advice: minimise existing cooperation with three Israeli universities erasmusmagazine.nl/en/2025/05/

This quote from a few years ago adds #framing that I find useful...

"#Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be #in_groups whom the #law protects but does not bind, alongside #out_groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time."

-- #FrankWilhoit 03/22/18 "There is No Such Thing as #Liberalism"

The original was an obscure blog post by Frank Wilhoit the composer, not the political writer Francis Wilhoit.

"The law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone; and it cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone."

A good mnemonic is "Rules [Taxes, Laws, etc.] for Thee, but not for Me."

Edit: Updated with better links to sources.

How fascism was preluded by the needs of the rich industrialist upperclass of 1920’s Europe, and applauded by liberal economists:

Elon Musk & AfD will tell you that fascists nationalised industries. But this only happened in wartime, or through the industrialists joining the party, continuing as they had.

Through 1920’s & 1930’s, fascism slashed worker wages, benefits & rights, while greatly increasing the wealth of the business owners.

Open call to all reply-people: how would you best describe the difference between #liberalism and progressivism to someone whose current understanding of the political spectrum is no deeper or nuanced than “liberal is left wing and good. Conservative is right wing and bad”?

If you consider “liberal” to be a pejorative descriptor, this is your time to shine. We’re looking for concrete and specific undeniable facts, not hand-waving broad statements.

Bonus points for finding a non-condescending but actually enlightening way to explaining it.
