#Optiplex

Different hardware did work right away. The trusty Dell Optiplex to the rescue.

Installed a dual-NIC SuperMicro low profile ethernet card in a Dell Optiplex 3010, installed OPNsense, and it got an IP from the Internet Service Provider.

I did have to check the setting to prefer IPv4 even if IPv6 is available because the ISP doesn't fully support IPv6 and requests were sometimes resolving quickly and sometimes taking a long time. Selecting to prefer IPv4 in the OPNsense settings fixed that issue.

Oddly, NetBSD crashes, looks like kernel panic - see picture, with the Xeon e3-1225 v2 processor in the Optiplex 3010. It boots fine with the intel i5-3450 cpu.

Linux Mint Debian edition live USB and Windows 10 SATA drive both boot fine and seem to be completely okay with the Xeon processor in this machine, but NetBSD is not happy about it.

It is such an unlikely configuration, probably never intended by Dell, so probably not worth officially reporting.

Like many #Linux users, I use that #OS to extend old #PC #hardware lifecycle. My #Dell #Optiplex 9020 includes a Pascal based #GPU.

My issue is I cannot install a more modern GPU because of physical constraints with the chassis itself.

>Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures are now feature-complete with no further enhancements planned. ... Users should plan migration .., as future toolkits will be unable to target [these] GPUs. 1/

I’m working on two similar Dell Optiplex machines, six generations apart.

The Dell Optiplex 3010 and the 3070.

Very similar in design and layout. The 3070 has nvne on board and PC4 memory, so certainly some changes.

Speaking of that nvme, the upgrades I did on the 3070 were:

  • a migration from a slow 500GB WD Blue hard drive to an nvme 1TB SSD
  • Doubled the memory from 8GB to 16GB
  • Upgraded the OS from Windows 10 Pro to Windows 11 Pro.

My three year old #Dell #Optiplex #Micro started complaining yesterday that it needed to pin my disk to 100% while I was trying to do something simple thus rendering the machine unusable. "What are you up to Optiplex?" I asked. Ah, trying to install #Windows11 #24H2. Well, let me just shut everything else down and use another machine while you do the dirty. Around fourteen, yes one and four, hours later it began its final reboots. Hmmm, maybe I need a newer desktop?

Can anyone confirm if it's possible to install Debian Linux (not Ubuntu) for Proxmox on a Dell Optiplex 7090 SFF / MT?

I ran into some challenges with a 7070 a few weeks ago, but managed to get it working with a BIOS upgrade. I'd like to know it'll work on a 7090 before I buy one.

Would also love to know if you can use a 4TB m.2 drive AND two 3.5" HDDs at the same time in the MT. Specs suggest it's not supported but 🤷

Comments, tips welcome from the #HomeLab #foss , #diy folks and all. I saw this cabinet at my local #thrift store, thinking of converting it into a data cabinet. Will need to add ventilation, but it’s solid, cheap & has a lock (need to keep junior engineers out). I don’t have much hardware yet, but will eventually add 24 port switch, a NAS. For now plenty of room for a pair of #optiplex es and MacMinis. Still deciding on protectli w/ #opensense or #pfSense appliance Thanks all 😊. Alt text added

To není život dostatečně složitý, ještě si to musíme sami sobě víc komplikovat? 🤦
Dnes půjdu podle různých návodů přímo od Dellu. #Linux

Homelabers, I'm interested in what versions of Optiplexes and ThinkCenters you use?

By thin ones I mean those which are small form factors, not towers.

The towers I mean the big ones for heavier work loads.

Reply with any info/other devices you use for servers.

Just spent the evening down the rabbit hole of and - I'm amazed how easy it was to get running. All my services are directly accessible by a two letter subdomain, all hosted on my little machine.

Tomorrow is linking Google Assistant to via SSL webhook, rather than through Nabu Casa. I *think* I can do the same with Smartthings, but I'm not sure if they're going to be happy with the SSL certs.

All this is making me think I need to buy a proper server to host all this, rather than a 6 year old office PC...

@justforfun "looks like the #OptiPlex 7050 I was going to use for my mom's first linux box is staying put at my house" 😂 I've been there!!! OPNsense (use a dedicated HW like the Fujtsu Futro 30/40€ on Ebay) because gets more updates and PFsense started to divide the community edition from a paid version

#HomeLab #foss people, looks like the #OptiPlex 7050 I was going to use for my mom's first linux box is staying put at my house and will be one of the components of my future #HomeLab I daily drive #Pop_OS , but would like any thoughts on what would be a good start for a box that will mainly run #JellyFin #WikiJS and or @FeatherWiki. Part of me wants to checkout RHEL, but what I really want is best documentation and community, b/c I will have questions, lots of questions. #OpenSense or PfSense?

I have a rare opportunity to visit family over 1000mi away and picked up an #Optiplex 5050 micro to leave behind as a back for my mom should her laptop gives out. She has very basic needs, Libre Office and web browsing (YouTube). She has 1Gb fiber and I was hoping to also make it my off site server (file sharing). My daily driver is #PopOs , but I think I need something lighter for this use case. Any recommendations #HomeLab #distro Thanks all :)
