Raising Jobseeker to $80 per day—in line with the Raise the Rate campaign—and indexing it to keep up with wages would cost $9.5 billion per year.

This a fraction of the cost of superannuation tax concessions ($50 billion per year) or the Capital Gains Tax discount ($15 billion), both of which mainly benefit the richest Australians.

The Australia Institute · Jobseeker payments are too lowNo-one in Australia should have to live on $56 a day. The current Jobseeker payment is inadequate by every metric, and the majority of families that rely on it live below the poverty line.

Day four: 🍻🍺 vs 🎓💰

While some issues are being discussed, one isnt HECS DEBT. We can talk about having a beer with the Prime ministerial candidates but not EDUCATION costs and spiralling debt.

While we’re at it. UNEMPLOYED? Has the living allowance been raised? At all, does it match inflation? Is it below the poverty line?

A reddit post i’ve stumbled across today - from the male of a 26yr old American couple.

They’ve had to make a heart wrenching decision give up their child for adoption, because today’s economy and the lack of government support for those doing it touch mean they can’t survive and provide for their child even on the bare minimum.

I hate to think how many Aussies might find themselves considering such an awful choice.

Ok folks.... I'm going to try to create two hashtags.
The #PovertyLine is obvious to everyone. Nobody should fall below the poverty line!
The #WealthLine is the new concept we must push everywhere in media, politics, economics, etc. Nobody should be allowed above the wealth line, Nobody. And, if you're afraid of the #WealthLine , then you're selfish and not really interested in a more equitable and sustainable world.
Let's push this concept, folks. Especially, let's push it on our politicians!

No increase to base jobseeker rate in budget means Centrelink payment remains below poverty line
theguardian.com/news/ng-intera

This latest federal budget offers little hope to unemployed people. Again, the government's safety-net is not enough for people left without work by the sad state of the economy. They should raise the dole until it's over the poverty line. Or, even better, offer a real fix in the form of a universal basic income.
