South Fork Fire Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) report (via @pjdohertygis )
The South Fork and Salt fires, which ignited on June 17, 2024, burned 17,066 and 7,688 acres, respectively, significantly impacting Lincoln National Forest. The Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) program assessed the damage, focusing on soil burn severity, hydrology, and critical values such as human safety, roads, recreation sites, and cultural resources. Collaborative efforts with various agencies aim to mitigate post-fire risks and support recovery.

I am passing on a personal (Facebook) testimony from a Ruidoso survivor about flooding, personal safety, decision making, and how the village is getting flooded again and again.
==================
My family minus Melissa almost died today...... Before I go into my story- I want to explain something... As you all know my parents live in Ruidoso and there was a fire... Thankfully we got them out and some of their stuff..... The fire came within 1/4 of a mile from the house.. Thank God their house did not burn... The day I was moving my parents back, a huge flood came and caused significant damage to areas of Ruidoso... My parents house was ok.. I went back and fourth the past month putting up sand bags and trying to keep the house safe.... There were at least 10 floods this past month and no sign of the flood coming near there house...

South Fork and Salt Fire Operational Update for 06/27/24
https://www.facebook.com/share/v/bqReK6ZmqH9ghQDN/?mibextid=0VwfS7
Closures: A South Fork Fire Emergency Closure Order was issued on June 20, 2024, for national forest lands within the Smokey Bear Ranger District. The identified areas, and roads and trails therein, are closed to public access to allow firefighting personnel to work and through the fire area safely. More information is available at https://www.fs.usda.gov/alerts/lincoln/alerts-notices/?aid=88147
Tribal members who have been displaced outside of the Mescalero Apache Reservation due to the fires are strongly encouraged to contact the Tribe's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to help you and your families get back to the reservation. If you're stranded out of town at other evacuation sites, please call the EOC at 575-464-9214 for more details.
Weather: Temperatures will remain in the mid-high 80s. Scattered showers and thunderstorms return, bringing along the risk of flash floods and debris flows.
Smoke: Smoke production will remain light to moderate with the highest impacts during the early morning and late evening hours. Additional details are available at https://outlooks.wildlandfiresmoke.net/outlook/430b2c05.
Reentry: No evacuations are in place. However, designated "NO ENTRY/EXCLUSION ZONES" remain in place in some areas of the village. Visit https://www.ruidoso-nm.gov/south-fork-fire or contact the Village of Ruidoso and Lincoln County Emergency Operations Centers for more information.
Fire Activity: The South Fork and Salt fires are experiencing limited fire activity, thanks in part to daily scattered storms, and the hard work firefighters are putting in to find and extinguish hot spots. Occasional smoke will be visible as pockets of unburned fuels and could ignite, even as monsoonal weather patterns move into the area.
Crews continue to mop up and begin to repair actions taken by firefighters to prevent the South Fork and Salt fires from growing. Cooperators, and utility providers are working to address service needs for communities. As a reminder, conditions are dynamic and will remain that way through the duration of the incident...

Per the KOB coverage: "“We do have a lot of people unaccounted for it this time. I’m not saying that they may be at shelter somewhere, we haven’t found them. So those will become crime scenes, once the bodies discovered or remnants, then they have to come in and forensically take care of that. That takes time. So we have all those areas boxed off,” said Ruidoso Mayor Lynn Crawford.
Village leaders revealed Sunday recovery teams have already identified more potential deaths, but it appears those are still under investigation."
Update: 2 killed, 29 missing per local media. Need to get the latest FEMA numbers, think it's 3 confirmed fatalities now.
"Officials already confirmed two people were killed in these fires, but at least 29 people are still missing right now. It appears village leaders believe they may be in the exclusion zones."
