...the failure of the Meidner plan. In the UK, we started to talk about "the forward march of labour halted".

Although we cannot turn the clock back, understanding what was and was not possible in those years should help social democrats forge a path ahead now.

jacobin.comRevisiting the Meidner PlanIn the 1970s, the Swedish labor movement developed a plan to gradually socialize ownership. What can we learn from it today?

“If you look at the bigger picture, isn’t this growing fear of immigrants showing the lack of confidence of Western societies?”

Part, even if not all, of this "lack of confidence" in Sweden and other western societies can be traced to the impasse of social Democratic movements in the 1970s. In Sweden, this took the form of...

#Communism seems like a good idea until you realise it requires an autocratic vanguard.

Likewise #Anarchism seems like a good idea until you discover communal factions which necessitate a social contract.

In between is #SocialDemocracy. That also seems like a good idea until you find out that half of the public are hypnotised by the propaganda of special interests.

Full on #corporate #capitalism with little to no safeguards eventually ends up on the far right of the political divide into unashamed #oligarchic #fascism and #tyranny.

We have #Reagan-Thatcher sponsored #ChicagoSchool of #Economics’ made to order theory of #neoliberalism to thank for it. As well as weak democratic (not to say corrupt) govts, who probably saw the excesses of the economic system but chose not to do a damned thing about it due to the benefits they derived.

I’m afraid it will take more than an #election-eviction of right-wing govts to set us back on the #SocialDemocracy path. #War is coming my friend unless someone very powerful pulls a rabbit out of a hat, and soon.

I’m normally a very optimistic guy, but I cannot ignore the obvious.

Any scholars of #LaborHistory or #SocialChange #historians who care to share their perspectives on society-wide #GeneralStrikes that augured significant advances in #labor political power and advanced reforms or #SocialDemocracy ? It seems each case and country/epoch could be quite unique, but perhaps there are shared aspects (for successful actions, as well as for flops). I'm wondering if there will be signs or necessary conditions to watch for here in the USA.

"People aren't crazy, people aren't stupid, they understand that this is an unjust world. That you can be filthy rich without working, and that you can work two jobs and still can't afford to find a home. That's the reality, for millions of people in the Western world, and if we don't fix that they'll never vote for us again."
