@MsDropbear42 Oh ffs, this latest experiment with #ZenBrowser has ended after only a few hours, due to yet another catastrophic failure, preceded by various annoyances:
Search Bar
refused to show the drop-down menu of alternative search engines [works fine in Search Bar
was gone again, the native tabs bar refused to Collapse again], but worst of all, all my open tabs were gone... again My dear old might be less pretty, less visually exciting, & might not have native split tabs, but far out it is & remains way way waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more reliable than Zen. I mean, it's really a bit silly...
is Alpha,
is Beta, yet the former is generally rock solid reliable in the ~decade i've been using it. Otoh, all my experiments with Zen, over the past ~12-18 months, have ended in disappointment, frustration, & often also destruction.
So, yet again, i return to...
#FirefoxNightly + #Mv2 #uBO + #Sidebery + #FirefoxSecondSidebar = THE best browsing & sophisticated tab management + Web Panel UX i've ever had, easily eclipsing Vivaldi,
#Floorp,
#ZenBrowser, Waterfox, LibreWolf... ergo =
#FirefoxNightly + #NativeVerticalTabs + #uBlockOrigin + #FirefoxSecondSidebar = Very usable already as of Feb 2025, albeit less powerful than Sidebery, ergo =
Though i've been back in my primary Masto for daily fediversing for several months now, one of the superior capabilities of #Friendica is its excellent native #RSS facility. Hence i certainly missed it when back in Masto. Thus, i was delighted, a few months ago when i was vigorously exploring alternative web front-ends for Masto, hoping for a slightly enhanced "Friendicasation" of my Masto UX, to discover that #Statuzer also provides a good RSS tool [as well as other benefits].
Unfortunately, in both cases, one of the sites' RSS feeds i've incorporated, is the NineFax SMH, which whilst quite good for breaking news [= my intention], routinely irritates me with endless sport$ feeds as well... the problem being that in both Friendica & Statuzer, afaict, the RSS timeline is impervious to all my existing filters, which do a good job of removing such unwanted content from my other timelines. Sassen frassen rassen.
@normplum Many thanks. Ironically, mere seconds before your toot, i regretfully had to disable my newly-finessed "Custom" settings, & revert to Auto, because atm there is no "Exceptions" option available. So, my carefully-styled #Statuzer front-end for Masto got overridden in a most suboptimal way, but the final killer was my shock discovery that #uBlockOrigin became unusable coz ALL its colour-coded matrix elements were obliterated by my new background colour. The Dev already knows of this problem by implication i suspect, given their example in their blog https://blog.monotonous.org/2025/03/06/New-Contrast-Control-Settings/. I shall keep fingers crossed for an imminent enhancement that addresses these usability problems. If so, i will be happy to be able to then remove another AddOn.
#Statuzer continues to be extremely pleasant for my daily fediversing UX
@MsDropbear42 @statuzer I've just realised something that might be a problem for your potential changes you intimated.
I use personalised choices for the various notification types in Notifications... ie, i do not simply use the default settings here. Thus, with my current paradigm of keeping the Notifications column pinned open, all my settings for it are preserved.
However, experimentation tonight has shown me that the potential new paradigm, of me keeping the Notifications closed / hidden, until new notifications arise, causes all my personalised Notifications settings to be lost; instead the defaults are reapplied. Logically this infers that my Notifications aspirations for this putative new paradigm would be at least partly defeated, as some of the notifications i want, would never be generated, whilst some i do not care to see/hear, would in fact arise.
For the general use-case of your app for most people, the current default behaviour of resetting values when removing a column, makes sense. It seems though that for my contemplated use-case, it might be fatal.
@voxel @jerry When you say ...
Blocking RSS takes this ability away from them, ultimately harming both infosec.space members and those who interact with them
...i might be misunderstanding your intended meaning, so the following might be irrelevant to your purpose. That said, fwiw:
I'm using an alternative front-end web client for my IS account; #Statuzer. I discovered last night that it [just like the non-Masto #Friendica SW, for Friendica instances] supports #RSS, so i have now added an extra column to my Statuzer multi-column UI, being the RSS feed from one of my news sites.
Hello @statuzer Since you fixed that old problem of the Likes not flowing across the timelines, i've been able to return to #Statuzer as my full-time fedi front-end, & am really enjoying it. Now i am experimenting with some alternative column / timeline arrangements, trying to optimise my UX. One of these was to try NOT having the Notifications column permanently visible, but instead only activate / open it when the Notifications Indicator icon tells me there's new notifications, then after i've read them, again closing this column.
I discovered a problem here.
Is the behaviour i've described your intended behaviour, or a bug? If it is deliberate, may i please respectfully request you consider changing the behaviour the way i suggested?
Thank you.
@nico198X @FediTips I want to like #Sengi, i really do, but each time i keep coming back to retry it, i simply have to leave it again coz:
It's a pity.
Have you tried #Statuzer?
@KevinM1 Indeed. That Boost Carousel thing doesn't float my boat. However my larger difficulties with it, which keep me dropping it each time i try it again, are:
Phanpy is great software, & has much to commend it, but those two issues utterly remove all the joy, for me.
cc: @phanpy
Have i gone blind? Afaict, the current version of #GlitchSoc used in #InfosecSpace , no longer lets us specify a character-number beyond which toots will automatically fold / collapse. I regarded that as a major reason for even bothering to favour a glitch.social
instance [along with, ofc, its support of Markdown formatting].
Maybe this is not even a recent change / degradation? Over recent months i've been repeatedly hopping between the native Masto web page, & #Statuzer, #Phanpy, & #Sengi, so possibly the change happened "unsighted" by me, months ago?
What a bugger!
@jerry - have you heard anything from upstream wrt if they plan to restore this feature, pls?
This is pretty disappointing, not least given the several months-old bug that broke correct behaviour of Unread notifications badge: Display a badge for unread notifications in the column icons when the notifications column isn't open
in the #AdvancedWebInterface remains unfixed.
A question to users of #sengi #sengiapp
When you look at your Notifications column, HOW do you discern new notifications from older ones you've previously seen?
Is there some icon / symbol i'm not seeing? Is there some different font or background colour i'm not seeing?
Or, is there none of that, & users are just expected to have a good memory? I have a rotten memory, so having to rely on it here is quite inefficient.
For reference, Mastodon itself, & also the #Statuzer alternative front-end, both provide a distinctive visual indicator for each new notification, which the user can hide once she's read all of them. I really wish i could have that same functionality in Sengi.
