New York and Vermont are extortionists, and California is a radical, says #DonaldJTrump, the person currently trying to extort a fair fraction of the countries of the world and whose SCOTUS is the most judicially activist radicals in history.

Yes, we live in a world that @cstross couldn't have made up.

We live in the world where the #TrumpCrash to the U.S.A. economy is in part happening because one of those #DOGE junior programmers or something made a dopey error in a spreadsheet that did not account for negative numbers when setting a floor of 10%.

And picked 0.25 for the φ constant in cell P399 instead of 0.95.

Mastodon App UKJdeBP (@JdeBP@mastodonapp.uk)A tip for spreadsheet users that I have learned from watching a mistake made by others: When you use =MAX(M2-X2/M2,0.1) to place a floor of 10% on how low you want your calculation to be of a fractional positive gap to reduce M2 to X2 by, please try to remember that the X2 cell value could be *already greater* than the M2 cell value. You probably want =IF(X2<M2,MAX(M2-X2/M2,0.1),0) or similar. Because if (say) M2 is 6.81E+10 and X2 is 7.99E+10, then your calculation is going to come up with 10% instead of 0%, let alone the correct -17%. Which might be embarrassing. Other unintended consequences of #tariffs is that they remove price competition, and domestic producers can raise prices.

Not that this increases profits, necessarily, as of course any imported raw materials or parts now cost more; and labour demands higher wages.

So consumer prices go up, but domestic profits do not.

And the money goes into the U.S.A. federal coffers and thence … somewhere.

The sad thing is all of the unintended consequences, such as pushing large parts of the world into closer relations with China.

In this sort of scenario, it's a push to move as much of the manufacturing chain as possible outwith the U.S.A. to Canada or to Mexico, so that it doesn't criss-cross multiple tariff borders, leaving only distribution and retail within the U.S.A..

#DonaldJTrump has not thought this through. Of course not.

I'm feeling a bit conflicted.
My granddaughter who is 16 has been accepted into the British Army.
She's one of my daughter's children so we've not seen her for a few years.

On the one hand I'm pleased that she's found her way in life - and that she's going to be away from the dreadful influence of her father.
Equally, I lean towards pacifism and I'm against militarism. I abhor the idea of child soldiers - which she will be later this year.

As the world drifts blindly into World War Three I really don't know what to think.
