I have plumbers replacing the sewer line at my tenant house. The digging machine hit and broke an electric wire underground. It sparked. Tripped a breaker inside the house, but everything works. The power line to the house is overhead. We can't figure out WTF it is, why it's hot, why it's connected to the breaker panel. So, they called an electrician who is going to reconnect it, they'll cover it up again, and I'll pretend we didn't see it.

The conference ended, and the guy about my age I’d been hanging out with talked to his coworkers about inviting me to come along to the homey old restaurant they were having dinner at. I gratefully accept their hospitality and transportation to and from, and the friendly dynamic of some tech geeks getting together at a dining establishment that would probably have been there to serve our grandparents. The guy across the table ordered a Samuel Adams.

There were a dozen of us on either side of that table, full of ideas and a love for the blossoming #electrical #engineering #technology that was getting designed and even manufactured across the country. For several more years, parts vendors wanted to be our friends, to get their special IC designed into the next special little box we dreamed up. It was circa 1999, the last best times.

Later we went to the Boston Aquarium. It was a great evening I’ll never forget, though I’ve long forgotten any of their names. But it was real and human and warm, and I’ll never get to experience anything quite like that again.

The reasons are many, but a few of them are (1) it’s 2025, not 1996, (2) we don’t make shit in this country anymore, and (3) #Covid
