I tried nontoxic clay (surround) sprays, but they were messy and ineffective at preventing coddling moth. So now I painstakingly look at every fruit, thinning clusters from 4-6 down to 1 undamaged fruit with a strong stem, and removing any rolled up leaves that may be hiding insects. Then I place drawstring bags on each fruit. This little 5 year old tree was easy because it’s only 6 feet tall, but I didn’t thin enough, and even I think it looks ridiculous. #orchards #gardening #permaculture
Thank you to everyone sending us #AppleBlossomWeevil capped blossom from their UK #orchards and trees. We are spotting some really interesting parasitoids developing - two or maybe three species. This implies we have some natural enemies of this re-emerging pest already present in the UK.
I thought this episode of the Urban Farm Podcast was pretty good. It's an interview with the co-executive director of an organization called The Giving Grove, which helps other organizations establish programs to create "community orchards". Maybe someday down the road I'll look into it more myself.

The yield of #cider apple trees are still very low, no cider this year. Perry pear is doing better but my #perry always have had a weird taste not sure why. Thinking I will make apple sauce with the less sightly apples this year. What to do with the perry pears? #gardening #Orchards
Decent looking apples. I am still fighting codling moth, not sure how to get rid of them. Tried hormone traps, I also threw away all apples last year to create a break in the cycle. This year was better but still have them. #gardening home #Orchards.
