Happy Pentecost!

"And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a mighty wind coming, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them parted tongues as it were of fire, and it sat upon every one of them: And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they began to speak with divers tongues, according as the Holy Ghost gave them to speak."

Acts 2, 2:4

Any Jew Will Do? ☹️

"The property company, located in the heart of the strictly #Orthodox area of north #London, had its windows smashed, computers and furniture destroyed, and red paint thrown across the shopfront. The pavement outside was marked with the slogan “#DropElbit” – an apparent reference to #Israeli defence contractor #ElbitSystems.

The #StamfordHill business, situated less than 150 metres from the nearest #synagogue, is owned by members of the strictly Orthodox #Jewish community but has no connection to #Israel, according to the local #rabbi."

The #BBC has an interesting report on the recent trend of ultra-conservative US Christians to convert to #Orthodoxy (typically the Russian flavours): bbc.com/news/articles/c30q5l8d

I find it however very unfortunate that there is only a passing reference to non-Russian/non-ultra-conservative versions of Orthodoxy.

This is lazy reporting. For example, while the Russian Patriarch's deranged "holy war" rants are being reported, a well as how these screeds are viewed by US converts, there is nothing about what the Ukrainian-American Orthodox faithful have to say for any of this. They also seem to not have reached for comment to any of the Orthodox bishops.

There are also repeated references to ultra-conservative #Orthodox views about homeschooling, LGBT rights, etc. Sure, Russia is crazy like this, but Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus are EU countries. Russia does not hold the monopoly on the meaning of Eastern Orthodoxy. Even in the US, this ultra-conservative streak is not dominant. Archbishop Elpidophoros of the Greek Orthodox archdiocese has for example caught flak for baptizing the children of a gay couple, and has attended BLM protests. Not to mention the important tradition of solidarity with social justice causes established by Iakovos, who marched with MLK in Selma in 1965.

There is a *lot* to criticize about Orthodox churches and their role in the world, but giving one-sided publicity to the worst among them on a global platform without any nuance is very unhelpful.

Now entering the Talmudic Rituals phase of the annual news cycle 🥸

"[A] growing chorus of religious voices now advocates moving beyond the #WesternWall entirely, urging Jews to pray directly on the #TempleMount itself. This unprecedented shift has ignited fierce debate within #Orthodox circles, pitting traditionalists against those seeking to reclaim #Judaism's most sacred space.

The controversy stems from a historical ruling by #Israel's Chief #Rabbinate, supported by the vast majority of the country's rabbis, prohibiting #Jewish ascent to the Temple Mount altogether. However, mounting challenges to this decision in recent years have prompted renewed theological examination of the issue. We consulted several prominent rabbis to understand their positions on this divisive matter."
