Rotary phones were in use long after that in Canada, and probably other places, but touch-tone was also available. In the late 80s/early 90s I still had a line that would only do pulse dialing, because touch-tone dialing was an add-on charge with the phone company where I lived.
It was a significant amount; just adding touch-tone support increased the monthly bill by almost 10%. Yes, this was a BS charge, because it was just a flag they set on your account. It didn't cost them anything to provide tone dialing. They still do the same thing with caller-ID, so I don't have it. "We don't care. We're the phone company; we don't have to."
At the time, many (perhaps most) phones you could buy had push-button dialing, but there was a switch on the phone to choose pulse or tone dialing. If you set it to pulse, you'd push the 7 button, and then you'd hear 7 clicks, etc.
So kind of "hybrid dialing".
The #MastoPrompt for Saturday 22 February 2025 is:
The poem or story can include the prompt word or be about the prompt word.
@ me, if you like, or just include the #MastoPrompt tag (to allow people to follow or filter their feeds), or keep your work to yourself - all the options are good as long as you're writing.
If you're including an image please do include alt-text if you’re able to.
Use a friendly and straightforward tone. Keep sentences short and easy to understand. Focus on being helpful, clear, and to the point. Avoid jargon—write like you're explaining to a friend.

METSÄÄN - OURBOROS AUTOPOIESIS - extreme EFX chain feedback looper
A feedback looper that squeezes the extreme out of your EFX-chain. Perfect for 'Tone scouts', sound-designers and those who like harsh noises. An extended version of the Death by Audio - Total Sonic Annihilation 2 pedal, the METSÄÄN version has a 3 stage MODE selector that switched between 'vanilla'/ORIGINAL and boosted HIGHS or LOWS, which exponentially enhances the sonic possibilities of the original pedal and allows for dynamic frequency shifts in a harsh noise live performance, for example. But this pedal is not just god for harsh noises, but also for subtle tone experimentation, imagine a sound modulator like a delay or tremolo modulating itself in a loop. wonderful textures and abstract saturation might occur. Sometimes, you might get not much out of it and with other set-ups a plethora of unexpected sonic gems. With some EFX chain set-ups an input signal is not needed, as you can generate no-input noise scapes. A experimental sound artist's treasure trove/ pandorra's box. This feedback looper enables you to send the output of your EFX-chain back into it's input, in NORMAL mode, you control the the amount with only the FEEDBACK (Note: this pot works counterclockwise) pot, but in the ACTIVE (indicated by a ultraviolet LED) mode you get hands-on control of GAIN, FEEDBACK, PHASE, FREQUENCY MODE and of course final OUTPUT LEVEL (to tame the potentially destructively loud signal.). The 4x 6.3mm mono sockets on the back side of the pedal are from left to right (when pointing away from you): OUTPUT, RETURN, SEND, INPUT. When the TRUE BYPASS (indicated with a green LED) is engaged, your signal still goes through your EFX-chain in the loop. The Power input is for 'boss-style', center negative 2.1mm DC plugs, that are pretty standard for EFX-pedals it needs 9V DC (PSU not included). Build into a standard die-cast aluminum enclosure individually painted in the the burned out industry camo pattern in chrome and black. Handmade by GRM for METSÄÄN.
DEMO VIDEO follows. Stay detuned.

Resolutions are not goals, but the tone for making oneself resolute. Instead of setting a goal, set three tones for the year, which will help you stay resolute. For me I am thinking: equilibrium, self-development and continuity. #resolutions #2025resolutions #tone #wintering #seasonalliving

Just had a Mastodon interaction where I tried to push back against a judgemental tone and the other said "no tone policing" plus a vulgar insult. Straight to report and block. I'm on here for constructive discourse, and polite pushback should elicit polite responses. Otherwise I'll protect my feed.
Tone matters, because not everyone has the spoons to deal with heightened emotions. Civil dialogue is dialogue that more people can participate in.
Hey!
A few minutes ago I heard one of my electronic devices and appliances go “Ding!” but I had no idea which device it was. They all sound much the same. I actually said out loud, to the non-persons who live in my apartment, “OK. What just beeped?” and I waited a moment to see if any of my appliances would answer me. None of them did.
Image from randtune via Android.gadgethacks.comA week or so ago, I missed a couple of texts from one of my adult children because I failed to hear the discrete “Ping” on my phone. I was in another room for one of those pings, and there was ambient noise from other devices going on when the second ping sounded. My son wanted to know if I was free to chat, which I was, but I missed both of the moments because of the understated ping.
Consequently, I changed the sound for notifications from a genteel ping to an authoritative “Hey!” It is a woman’s voice and it gets my attention every time, even if I’m in another room.
Hey! image via Algot Runeman at Flickr.comFor some reason, it reminds me of my mother. I don’t think she ever yelled “Hey!” in my direction, but the tone is familiar. I remember her calling me in for tea time, or bed time, or bath time, as she stood in either of the front or back doorways of the family home. In those days, I played outside whenever possible, and usually close to home.
Once, though, I was waylaid by some friends who talked me into wandering further away. I ended up in a field and playground a long way from home, and I think I crossed a stream while wearing my school shoes. I also lost track of time, so that when I was walking back and getting close to home, I could see my mother standing on the sidewalk with her arms folded. I knew I was in trouble.
The time was much later than I had imagined and mum had become very anxious. In my family, parental anxiety translated into strict behavioural consequences. When she learned I had been in a stream, my mum said “There are leeches in that stream!” and I was promptly stripped of my clothes and put into a bath.
That was one of the few times when I felt my mother’s fears for me turn in chastisement. I never felt punished, exactly, but I always knew when I had crossed a line.
It is odd, then, that my cell phone’s “Hey!” reminds me of my mum when she was cross. She never actually said “Hey!”, but the tone of the voice on my phone is so close to my worried mum’s that it always gets my attention. It isn’t what is said that matters. It’s all in the resonance. And the folded arms.
What is #Tone? — A Guide for #Storytellers
https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-tone-in-literature-definition/
Tone is how an #artist feels towards the #art they #create — sounds simple enough right? Well, consider this: how do we know how an artist #feels?
No timelapse this time. It got overwritten by another project, unfortunately. Instead, here's the ink+tone version, which I quite liked. This grainy brush is quite nice to use.
