#Malaysia is currently implementing #DNS Hijacking on known public DNS resolvers. Google, Cloudflare and Quad9 are confirmed affected. There have been reports that Adguard DNS is affected as well.

Unencrypted DNS is affected, and there have been mixed reports of DoH/DoT being affected as well. Thankfully #ControlD isn't affected yet but its probably a matter of time.

Need some #help on how to approach this. I can't afford a VPN subscription for my whole family.

Pi-Hole v Control D v NextDNS on a home router

I did some detailed speed testing and for my setup, a daemon on my home router, NextDNS was significantly faster. I posted all the results on my blog (link below):

In summary:

1) A Pi-Hole on the local LAN is fastest, but takes maintenance.

2) If you have a simple configuration just putting the DNS address in your home routers menus, Control D and NextDNS seem similar in performance.

3) If you want to run the daemon as a service on your router, NextDNS is MUCH faster than Control D. And NextDNS does local caching on the router. (Control D can supposedly be configured to do caching, but I couldn't get the config file to work.)

4) NextDNS has an easier to use web control panel, but has fewer features.

iCloud Private Relay is so useless and unreliable sometimes.

In this screenshot you can see #ControlD status page, to check DNS latency, other info and also your own IP.

As you can see #iCloud is successfully masking my ipv4 (you see the Cloudflare relay instead) but it’s failing to mask my ipv6.

Is it always like that? No. If I disable and re-enable it, it will mask the ipv6 too 🤷🏻‍♂️

Made the switch today from #NextDNS to #ControlD.

The switch was not due to NextDNS not filtering my traffic, but that their iOS configurator no longer respected the “exclude ssid" option. I started a trial of ControlD and it just worked.

Fast forward one day - I have now bought a 5 year deal on Stacksocial and added a config to the router.

The NextDNS website still looks better, but ControlD appears to be more in active development (features and bugfixes)
