#cosmicray

Physics as a community has often acted like one large recycling program. I was looking for sources for a paper I am co-authoring when I found a report from 1969 about a mobile #CosmicRay station. I read it and spotted the B&W photo below, showing the specialized curved lead bricks.

Those same bricks are now used in the #HALO experiment @SNOLAB, which recycled the lead from a cosmic ray station in Deep River, ON, Canada … the same site that made this mobile cosmic ray station!

I have a #serial #terminal like the ones used in the #fallout #television #show. One of the plastic #monitor tube mounting posts is broken and it did not turn on but might just be a fuse. Been sitting in the attic for a long time. I salvaged it from the university of #minnesota #CosmicRay lab when they shut it down 35 years ago. It was used to #bootstrap a #PDP-11 #computer by typing in several lines of assembly to bring up the main #OperatingSystem. I'll see if I can get it working again or may be repurpose/retrofit it as a modern computer monitor. They offered me the PDP-11 at the time also but it was too big for me to retain.

A Ray From #Space Hit #Earth with Such Incredible Power That Scientists Named It After a God
The source of the #Amaterasu particle, named after the Japanese sun goddess, is a "big mystery." It’s the second-highest-energy #cosmicray ever recorded, at 240 exa-electron volts (Eev), second only to the aptly-named "Oh-My-God particle" discovered in 1991, which clocked in at 320Eev. Researchers describe the energy as equivalent to dropping a brick on your toe from waist height. vice.com/en/article/v7bqj3/ama

Meet “#Amaterasu”: #Astronomers detect highest energy #cosmicray since 1991
The #Telescope Array in Utah's West Desert picked up a rare particle with 244 EeV energy. It's the most energetic cosmic ray detected since 1991, when astronomers detected the so-called "Oh-My-God' particle, with energies of an even more impressive 320 EeV. Astronomers have dubbed this latest event the "Amaterasu" particle, after the Shinto sun goddess said to have created Japan. arstechnica.com/science/2023/1

amaterasu particle, mystic cosmic ray from the out of galaxy.
Cosmic rays - charged particles = ions, electrons, and charged quanta.
It's curious massive cosmic ray suddenly appears when no intense phenomenon has happened in the space (ordinary rule is opposite).

宇宙線ー荷電粒子=イオン、電子、電荷を持った量子。
普通宇宙線は激しい事が起こってるところから生まれるが、何も起こってないところから最大のものがいきなり現れたというのが面白い。
