This is a landscape (orientation) image of the Juan de Fuca Strait made from Holland Point on the Dallas Road walkway.

In this image the shore and the water occupy about ¼ of the bottom of the frame because this image is all about the clouds stretching across the strait from the mountains in Washington.

A tumultuous mixture ranging from very dark grays to white, arching across the frame. And in one small pocket right at the water line, a small burst of yellow and the beginning of a sunset.

Heading Home

This image shows a cabin cruiser heading west along the Juan de Fuca Strait, likely toward Victoria harbour. The boat is probably about 10m/30ft long, but is tiny in comparison to the expanse of ocean, sky and mountains surrounding it.

Landing Capsule

(the Wookies have arrived)

This shows the base of a very large tree and root base resting on a gravel beach. The driftwood piece has the rough shape of an Apollo landing capsule. The rocks of Finlayson Point and the ocean (Juan de Fuca Strait) can be seen in the background.

Beacon

This is an image made from the shore at Holland Point, looking across the Juan de Fuca Strait. There's a rocky shore at the bottom of the frame and tumultuous clouds at the top. In the middle of the frame is a fishing boat making its way across the water, backed by fog. Emerging slightly from the fog is a buoy with a lighted beacon on top.

A shoreline image of the Juan de Fuca Strait from the Canadian side facing Washington State USA. The day is foggy, so the view is of a hazy gray horizon. But the sky opened briefly at one point and a single ray of sun lit a slightly submerged rock and added sparkles to it and to the waters between it and the shore itself. A lucky photo opportunity!

Lost in the Fog

This is a landscape orientation image made along the Dallas Road shoreline. The top half of the image is a matrix of clouds. Along the bottom of the image is a split-rail cedar fence; beyond that is a short grassy verge, followed by the cliff that falls down to the shore. In mid-frame on the left are the mountains in Washington state, and on the right is the Ogden Point breakwater and cruise ship terminal. The end of the breakwater is slowly devoured by the fog.

Two ways to light up the night.

This is a 5-image HDR composite of the Ogden Point Cruise Ship Terminal at night, made from a spot on the rocks at Holland Point on the Dallas Road shoreline. There's one ship in port (Quantum of the Seas) - all lit up - with the reflections lighting up the water in front of it.

This is a merge of two 5-image HDR composites showing the full moon in the sky over the Juan de Fuca Strait. There are a few wispy clouds above the moon, and a lighted path in the water reaching across the strait from Port Angeles, WA in the background to Holland Point in Victoria at the bottom of the frame.

Surfbirds

(appropriately named!)

This is a composite of two images, one above the other. In the upper frame, a flock of about two dozen Surfburds are gathered along the shore feeding. Several are on the shore, four are in flight and three are sitting on top of a driftwood log more or less perpendicular to shore. Surfbirds are smaller than the average chicken, their heads, backs, tails and the tops of their wings are dark brown, and their undersides from chest to tail and the bottom of their wings are white.

In the lower frame, the reason for their flight becomes evident as a was crashes in, washing over the top of the log on which the birds were sitting.

First image of the day...

Holland Point at low tide.

This is a wide panoramic view of a night scene by the shore at Victoria's Holland Point. The tide is quite low (0.8m) so the foreground shows the bedrock, gravels and driftwood of the shoreline area.

The image is looking west, so in the background are the lights of Ogden Point (breakwater and docking area for cruise ships in season) and beyond that to western Victoria, Esquimalt, View Royal, Colwood and out toward Metchosin.

This photo was taken early November. Standing on a grassy bluff at the south end of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada overlooking the Juan de Fuca Strait ... with Washington State's outline faintly visible in the distance. It's 3 o'clock in the afternoon, but the sun, center stage in the scene, is muted with an overcast haze. There is a moon-like, pale reflection of the sun, making it sparkle ever so softly on the water's surface. It looks more like a full moon night scene!

The picture is mostly silver and grey with blue tones and touches of cream colour. Looking over the trees we see the water of the Juan de Fuca Strait, and then the sky with massive clouds and the streaking of distant rainstorms.
