Hey, #OpenTelemetry users, prometheusexporter IS NOT exporting anything in the classical sense. You should not point that to your Prometheus instance. It's more like an exposer, that is emitting the metrics in your pipeline on the #OTel collector on a given port. This port is what you actually need to configure instead of the endpoint where you want to push metrics.

I know, it's a terrible name, but why do people are keep having this configured like this? Aren't they checking the logs to see errors, or - even better, aren't they concerned why the metrics are not showing up in the desired location?

Are you using OTel Ruby SDK logging in production, particularly for a Rails application? It's still marked Development, but... it seems to work and the community is responsive. I have an open source #golang library and I want to add counters to it.

Right now i am just using #prometheus with promauto but being open source it should be more "generic".

Looking at #otel it seems like a nightmare to instrument compared to promauto.

Anyone have any suggestions or examples?

I loathe the Rust OTEL/tracing crate APIs so much. No, wait, that’s not right. The library APIs expose every single bit of the complexity of OTEL, and this is not complexity I want to engage with when using OTEL. (The _over_ complexity of OTEL, if you ask me, but nobody did. It's the usual industry standard where 98% of the spec explosion is about covering 2% of the use cases and 98% of those are speculative. Exaggerate? Me?)

What I _want_, of course, is a library that smooths all that away to make the 80% case super-easy. I'd love ways to break the glass in emergencies, but most of the time I want to set up one funnel for traces for a simple API service and set like five config options for it.

I have found one crate that does almost this but it exposes too much and is too opinionated about what it hides. I think I'm going to have to write one.

Please tell me I'm wrong and that I'm just bad at searching. kthx
