In general I try not to swear so much these days, but...
... why the FUCK is this set to "Everyone" by default?

@festal @katzenberger @Gargron It should be possible to not allow #quotePosts at all, and it should be the default behaviour with allowing quote posts being #optIn.
It's what he promised. It's what he should deliver. And while he has a proven history of ignoring even the best supported change requests in the Mastodon Github, it should be the top issue until it is fixed.
Just did a quick and dirty spreadsheet to find out what percentage of instances and users are on Mastodon 4.4 (pre-quote-posts) and 4.5 (quote-posts), and it's like this:
4.4 (pre-quote-posts): 29.7% of instances, 9.1% of users.
4.5 (quote-posts, but not yet): 1.2% of instances, 11.0% of users.

in a call about quote posts and i can't help but think about doing a choose-your-own-adventure with this spec...
I just realized ivory can do quote posts.
I’m curious what the point of them is?
I was always confused on X when people used them
Mastodon really has become the new matrix ...
Holy heck, I just saw an announcement for quote posts in Mastodon 4.4. That's a big design change. #QuotePosts #Mastodon #UX
Update: Quote Posts are now implemented in 4.4 and will be available in 4.5

Tiny Mastodon Tip About Quote Posts
If your instance is already running the newly released version Mastodon 4.4,
Know that in preparation for the full implementation, the team has included a consent setting for the upcoming Quote Post feature.
While quoting a post will not
be available as a native feature until Mastodon 4.5 later this year, it's wonderful that you can adjust if you want in or not before it even arrives!
HOW TO
1. From the web interface, go to "Preferences" on the right-side menu. Then click on "Other" under the "Preferences" section
2. If your instance was newly updated, you should now see an option in "Posting Defaults" for "Who can quote" (see image below)
Note: If the option isn't there, your instance has not updated to the version including it yet. Be patient, it will likely be added in the weeks to come.
3. From the "Who can quote" drop-menu, you can choose either "Everyone", "Followers and mentioned users", or "Only mentioned users"
4. Once the next version is released, you will be ready for Quote Posts! No matter your choices
5. Enjoy the freedom of choosing the features you wish to participate in (or not)!
For more information on Quote Posts, you can read Mastodon's announcement blog about it here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2025/02/bringing-quote-posts-to-mastodon/
Headline: Bringing Quote Posts to Mastodon
Me: These implementation features are encouraging: You will be able to choose whether your posts can be quoted at all.
You will be notified when someone quotes you.
You will be able to withdraw your post from the quoted context at any time.
But nothing I read addresses my singular concern...(cont'd)

Lost in the news about #QuotePosts in the new version of #Mastodon is the new "featured profiles" feature.
It's like the MySpace top-8 friends list!
Somebody #quotePost this so I can see what #quotePosts look like in #mastodon!
Are you planning on allowing
your posts to be quoted by anyone once the Mastodon feature gets fully implemented later this year?
Well now, finally
TechCrunch: #Mastodon’s latest update readies the app for #QuotePosts, revamps design
https://techcrunch.com/2025/07/08/mastodons-latest-update-readies-the-app-for-quote-posts-revamps-design/
It's coming
"Support for verifying remote quotes according to FEP-044f and displaying them in the Web UI has been implemented.
Quoting other people is not implemented yet, and it is currently not possible to mark your own posts as allowing quotes. However, a new “Who can quote” setting has been added to the “Posting defaults” section of the user settings. This setting allows you to set a default that will be used for new posts made on Mastodon 4.5 and newer, when quote posts will be fully implemented."
Cool.
Mastodon is planning to release a new update, version 4.4, with the first beta now available. The biggest feature of the patch is that it will display quoted posts. The highly requested feature will only be fully available in version 4.5, which will include the ability for users to create quoted posts. Mastodon CTO Renaud Chaput says that he expects version 4.4 to be released at the end of June, with version 4.5 scheduled a few months later.
Whereas on platforms with threaded conversations, quotes are usually used in comments within a thread, and on many platforms, such comments could be removed by the thread owner.
