DINOSAUR JR.
Where You Been
2015 U.S. reissue
Hot Pink #vinyl

More Dinosaur Jr., please.

As far as pure guitar shreddage goes, this is where to get peak J. Mascis godstroking.

92-93 was the most formative 2 years of my musical life. So many of my favorite #90s records are all mashed between those 2 years, and this is no exception.

Distinct memories of smoking joints before homeroom behind the utility shed before homeroom, with “Start Choppin’” blaring at full volume from my Walkman.

“Out There”… killer opener.
“Not The Same”… epic.
And “Start Choppin’” might be my favorite Dinosaur song… but it’s hard to say when there’s always 15-20 of them in the running for that distinction.

J. Mascis set an impossible standard for all us #altrock axe slingers.

We should have known back then.
We should have gave up the guitar and took up sun bathing for a living.

Nobody has or will EVER shred like J.
FACTS.

CRYAN SHAMES
Synthesis
1968 U.S. pressing

Some more late #60s #psychedelic rock, this one from the great state of Illinois.

I learned of this from a friend of mine, who is a great connoisseur of all things #1960s #acidrock and #psych .
He threw it on during one of my visits back home to Boston, and the opening track “Greenburg, Glickstein, Charles, David Smith, & Jones” more than caught my attention.

I would also bring your attention to “Baltimore Oriole”; a song that opens with layers of strings and flute, which unfolds into a breezy, folky (almost renaissance-y) sounding song.

Out of the kindness of his own heart, my friend gave me his copy, and I’ve revisited it several times in the last few years, always ignited by my need to hear “Baltimore Oriole”.

The band made three records in two years (1967-1968), and that was it.
Relegated to the seemingly endless heap of seldom talked about 60s bands.

KENSINGTON MARKET
Aardvark
1969 Canada pressing

I found this record in a thrift store around 2007 when I first moved to B.C..
I had never heard of them before, so I took a gamble.

They were a Canadian band from Toronto, and Aardvark contains wistful, breezy, #psychedelic pop songs.
Couple odd facts about the personnel here:
There’s some occasional keyboard here played by Jon Mills-Cockell, who is better known for his role in the more well-known Canadian band Syrinx.
And oddly, drummer Jimmy Watson is Van Morrison’s cousin.

With the exception of “Dorian” (which pushes nearly 7 minutes), all these songs are around 3 minutes or less, making for an enjoyable, compact listen of #60s #Psych Canadiana.

A monster album.
I care about this record just as much Walter Screifels’ previous band Quicksand’s masterpiece, Slip.

Like Quicksand, it’s extremely melodic under those massive, gun-metal guitars.
“Used For Glue”, “Good Things”, “Travel By Telephone”; these are great songs.

If I go on road trips, I can’t listen to Quicksand’s Slip without putting THIS on immediately after.

Great album, and very under appreciated.
